Question:
Dear doc If i have gential warts and if I have sex as long as the warts are covered will they not spread to my girlfriend. Also question 2 If the condom touches the warts when putting it on will the virus be on the condom so I will spread it anyway.
james
Answer:
Condoms are very good protection against the spread of most STDs but they are certainly not infallible - which is why condoms used by couples for contraception only still are associated with a pregnancy rate of 3% over 12 months - and then only when used absolutely "correctly and consistently". In reality, some studies have found a pregnancy rate as high as 14%. Therefore it is clear that condoms still allow transmission of sperm and so other (viral) secretions. However, they are still the best way to reduce the risk of transmission. These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.
