Question:
I'm a British woman and wondering if many other Expats give birth in Moscow. Are the facilities good here? Is it easy enough to register the newborn child in UK to obtain British citizenship and passport etc.? Which is the best maternity hospital in Moscow? Thanks.
GB
Answer:
Thankyou for your inquiry. This is a commonly asked question among ex-pat patients residing in Moscow and deciding where to deliver. There are some general recommendations for you to consider. Each person is different and therefore these are only recommendations, and these may be different for you. If this is your first pregnancy, I would recommend you deliver in the UK, for reasons that the first pregnancy experience should ideally not be complicated by a hospital of unfamiliar surroundings, and even with an interpreter present there needless to say will carry with it some interpretation difficulties if you are delivering in a hospital in Moscow. Of course if you are fluent in Russian this may not be a factor. Your past history of gestational complications or current anticipated complications for this pregnancy should also be considered. Generally high risk pregnancies should deliver in a centre of excellence for obstetrics if at all possible, outside of Russia as even though these pregnancies could be managed in a Russian hospital, there may not be with consistent confidence to the level of excellence expected by the expatriate patient. If this is your third or fourth pregnancy with an uneventful past history, given that there is not a language barrier which can be bridged with an interpreter, delivering in Moscow can be an option for you. Hope this is helpful to you, Best regards
