| I'm 35 years old and my OBGYN said I had enlarged ovaries. However, he also said that I do not have PCOS, endometriosis, uterine polyps, or fibroids. What other disorders cause enlarged ovaries?

| I'm glad you've consulted your OBGYN regarding this problem; what symptoms did you have initially or was this an incidental finding? As well, how enlarged is enlarged? Was there a mass? Was there any suggestion of cysts? It is good to hear that you have not been diagnosed with PCOS, endometriosis, uterine polyps or fibroids. I assume that the doctor has also ruled out an ovarian tumour. The most common cause of enlarged ovaries are cysts, which may be single (often functional cysts at the time of ovulation) or multiple (in the case of PCOS). Other causes of enlarged ovaries include endometriosis (chocolate cysts), tumours (benign and malignant), thyroid disease and infection (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease). As well 'enlarged ovaries' may be mistakenly diagnosed when there is enlargement of a tissue close to the ovary, including masses in the soft tissues, nerves or uterus. It is important that all these causes are excluded, then the physician can advise that the situation is most likely a normal variant; however ovarian size should be followed regularly by ultrasound examination.
