| What is the situation with pre-natal care and birth centers in Moscow? I have been warned so frequently not to have anything to do with the Russian health-care system, but a lot of it sounds like hysteria. Are the Russian hopitals ok, and do the various forgein health-care centers handle pre-natal and delivery?

| Thank you for your question. Some of the international clinics here provide prenatal care from Russian or foreign family practitioners or from specialists. For women choosing to deliver here the only option is through a local hospital. The standard of care at these hospitals and clinics vary. At International SOS Clinic, we provide prenatal care up to 36 weeks of pregnancy and follow standard international guidelines. We recommend that women with high risk pregnancies and those in their first pregnancy plan to deliver outside Russia. Such women should leave Russia by the 36th week of pregnancy or earlier if there are problems. For other women with a low risk pregnancy they may prefer to deliver in Russia. Around the Moscow area there are some good maternity hospitals. However for many foreign women they may not feel comfortable giving birth in a Russian hospital. We suggest that women visit one of these hospitals in early pregnancy to decide if they want to stay or not. Such visits can be arranged through SOS clinic. Hope this information helps.
