Question:
I had amalgams put in my teeth while waiting to get crowns. I have left them for quite a few years now. What are the side effects of leaving them in, would they have any affect on blood pressure. How are they removed successfully. What is the approx. cost of removing and replacing with crowns.
NY
Answer:
I will try to answer all your questions, one after another. That you have received Amalgam fillings is not bad in general, since they are very stabil and longlasting. The reason for the big discussion about Amalgam among dentists is because of the mercury that Amalgam contains. This mercury, toxic by itself, is very slowly over many years solved out of the fillings and can be seen as potential reason for a number of diseases, mostly chronic in character, as for example Psoriasis. If patients would complain more than usual headaches and metallic taste or a feeling of some "electricity" in their mouth, this would be hints for a unusual reaction to this Amalgam. However, by medical means it can't be proven to be the reason, but from the other side it is not possible to exclude it either. Alternative medicine claims about 300 reasons against Amalgam with the effect, that many dentists are not using it anymore, so do I. Still I wouldn't remove all existing fillings if not indicated by other reasons or some of the symptoms mentioned above. Removal of Amalgam fillings is done with the dental high speed handpiece and effective suction, so that the Amalgam is not going to be swallowed. One more possibility is to use Rubberdam, to remove all fillingmaterial successfully. As for the costs of the removal and placing crowns on your teeth, the prices in Moscow show a range from 150.- up to 1000.- US $ for one crown, i.e. Metall ceramic crown, depending of russian or western clinics, different metalls used and the quality of the ceramic. Our price for such a crown is 650.-$. Best regards, VG
