19:00 Romeo and Juliet
Ballet to music by Sergey Prokofyev. Conducted by Timur Zangiev. The Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Moscow Music Theatre presents the premiere of the ballet Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev. The director Konstantin Bogomolov and choreographer Maxim Sevagin actualize the plot and deprive it of the touch of a romantic fairy tale. The action of Shakespeare’s drama is transferred from the Middle Ages to the present day and develops at once on two parallel plot levels. On one of them, the modern Romeo and Juliet come to a tragic Shakespearean ending. The parallel level presents an alternative version, where the characters choose to live. The production is created jointly with the MART Foundation. The play, set in Verona, Italy, begins with a street brawl between Montague and Capulet servants who, like the masters they serve, are sworn enemies. Prince Escalus of Verona intervenes and declares that further breach of the peace will be punishable by death. Later, Count Paris talks to Capulet about marrying his daughter Juliet, but Capulet asks Paris to wait another two years and invites him to attend a planned Capulet ball. Lady Capulet and Juliet's Nurse try to persuade Juliet to accept Paris's courtship...
