The story is told over the course of 11 years: we journey with her from the time her daughter vanishes, through the trials-and-tribulations of subsequent years, and ultimately to the long-awaited discovery of the truth.

Claire, a 50-year-old divorced teacher, creates a fake account on Facebook as a 24-year-old woman with the picture of a young brunette in order to stalk her young lover. She sends his best friend Alex a friend request — and he responds. Light virtual flirting turns into a shared attraction, and soon Alex asks to meet in person. She must lie to him about trips, work, and even about a jealous ex. The more confused the situation becomes, the harder it is for Claire to stand it. She is in love with Alex, while he is in love with her fake alter ego. Claire is torn between her love and the need to admit to her lies — which means losing that love forever.
