 Cologne, Germany's Wolfgang Voigt is easily one of techno's most prolific, influential, and revered figures, but he's received the greatest acclaim for his ambient techno recordings under the moniker Gas. During the early '90s, Voigt had been known for producing harder techno and acid under names such as Mike Ink and Vinyl Countdown. He also started the Profan label in 1993, as well as the Delirium record store; both were precursors to the highly influential Kompakt. In 1995, Voigt began releasing material as Gas, which expanded on the ideas of some of his more ambient and minimal-leaning projects such as M:I:5, Love Inc., and Studio 1. Voigt stated that Gas was inspired by childhood experiences in the forest near his hometown, and the music was lush and expansive, combining steady, hypnotic 4/4 beats with dense layers of ambient sounds. Much of his Gas material was created from slowed-down samples of pop, disco, and classical music, which were manipulated and altered beyond recognition. The tracks are typically lengthy and don't have proper beginnings or endings, functioning as sound environments or atmospheres rather than typical songs. Nevertheless, there is something highly accessible and even addictive about the recordings, and their following has continued to grow since their initial appearance during the '90s. Following 2000's well-regarded full-length Pop, Voigt seemed to retire the Gas project. However, he revived it for remixes and performances during the 2010s, and began releasing new Gas full-lengths in 2017.

 The Swedish death metal band Hypocrisy was formed by Peter Tägtgren in 1990 upon his return to Sweden from Florida, where he had been inspired by that state's flourishing death metal scene (bands like Morbid Angel, Deicide, Death, and Obituary). Hypocrisy's first demo was recorded entirely by Tägtgren himself; once it secured him a record deal, he recruited a lineup of Masse Broberg (vocals), Jonas Österberg (guitar), Mikael Hedlund (bass), and Lars Szöke (drums), while he himself settled on guitar. This lineup released Penetralia in 1992, upon which point Österberg left the group. Obsculum Obscenum appeared in 1993, and Broberg subsequently departed as well, with Tägtgren assuming vocal duties. Thus reconstituted as a power trio, Hypocrisy began to hit its stride, recording The Fourth Dimension (1994), Abducted (1996), and The Final Chapter (1997); in the meantime, Tägtgren developed an alternate career as a producer, working with bands like Dimmu Borgir, Immortal, and Dark Funeral. Hypocrisy officially disbanded following the release of The Final Chapter; however, fan interest persuaded Tägtgren to reconsider the breakup, and a live album, Hypocrisy Destroys Wacken 1998, was released in early 1999 as a precursor of things to come. Their latest album End of Disclosure was released in March 2013.

 Starting to compose music as a teenager, Lee Mays (Lee Mays), aka Percy Mays, today is now a legendary singer, composer, winner of the prestigious Dove Awards. In the 70s, Lee Mace performed with several popular artists in the US, and also toured with his songs throughout America. In 1976, his legendary album Shine Your Love was released, and the song that served as the title for the album was regularly played on Christian radio stations in Texas and Oklahoma. Lee Mace's mastery also includes the ability to work in such genres as adult contemporary, R & B Pop, and soft jazz. In 2014, Lee Mace released his first full album. The CD "Real Love" received praise from music critics and fans from around the world. Several pieces from this album are regularly played on radio stations in the USA and Europe. Since 2015, Mr. Mace has frequently toured Eastern European countries, including Russia and Ukraine.

 Best known as the female vocalist for Finnish gothic/symphonic metal act Nightwish, Tarja (full name Tarja Soile Susanna Turunen) was born on August 17, 1977, in Kitee, Finland. Her prowess as a soprano landed her a place studying classical voice at the Sibelius Academy in Kuopio, where fellow student Tuomas Holopainen took on Tarja as vocalist for his musical project, which was to be christened Nightwish in 1996. Tarja continued to pursue solo interests during her time recording and touring with Nightwish, including a solo in a 1999 rock ballet, a 2002 tour of South America, and a 2004 Christmas single entitled "Yhden Enkelin Unelma" ("One Angel's Dream"). In 2005, Tarja was asked (via "open letter") to leave Nightwish, with the rest of the band citing financial and personal concerns. Tarja became a solo artist full-time. October 2007 saw the release of that first solo album, My Winter Storm, which was released on Spinefarm Records. In 2009, she began work on her second solo effort, taking time out to record a duet with Klaus Meine of the Scorpions, "The Good Die Young," which appeared on the veteran group's 2010 album Sting in the Tail. In the fall of 2010, Tarja's second solo album, What Lies Beneath, was released; an ambitious effort combining classical and metal elements, Tarja supported the release with extensive touring, including a series of German dates opening for Alice Cooper. In 2013, Tarja's third solo effort, Colours in the Dark, was released. The album was a commercial success, rising to the Top Ten of the album charts in the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, Poland, Russia, and the U.K. and charted in 12 countries overall. Tarja also made a guest appearance on the EP Paradise (What About Us?) by the Dutch group Within Temptation. In 2015, Tarja issued her third live album, Luna Park Ride, which was recorded in Buenos Aires, Argentina. In March 2016, she announced two new studio albums. The first, Brightest Void: The Prequel was issued in June and included guest appearances from Michael Monroe (a duet on the single "Your Heaven and Your Hell"), Chad Smith, and Within Temptation. She performed the set during a summer tour that also featured material from The Shadow Self, which was released in August.
