19:00 Britten-Shostakovich Festival Orchestra (Russia-UK)
2019 marks the occasion of the Year of Music, a bilateral initiative between Russia and the United Kingdom, and the Britten-Shostakovich Festival Orchestra was conceived with this initiative in mind. What makes this orchestra stand out, however, is that it is expected to continue and develop as a regular annual event in the musical calendars of both countries, to maintain a dynamic cultural collaboration between these young musicians. The orchestra is composed of similar numbers of British and Russian conservatoire age musicians, providing them with an invaluable musical and cultural experience that will leave a lasting impression at a key stage in their development. This concert is one of a series of public concerts taking place across Russia and the UK, and will be the first time that most of these musicians will have experienced such a large-scale international musical collaboration. Conductor: Jan Latham-Koenig. Piano: Pavel Kolesnikov. The Orchestra will perform Ralph Vaughan Williams' Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis; Sergei Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini Op 43; Benjamin Britten's Four Sea Interludes Op 33a; Dmitri Shostakovich's Suite for Variety Stage Orchestra.
