A Million Little Pieces

This is a new scandalous drama from the director of “Fifty Shades of Gray,” Sam Taylor-Johnson. Her heroes yet again try with aplomb and contradictions to fight their passions and pitfalls—this time, related to drug addiction. The film is based on the autobiographical bestseller by writer James Frey.The main character, played by the director’s husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kick-Ass,” “Anna Karenina,” “Nocturnal Animals”), heads to a specialized rehab clinic. His new home brings with it many challenges, surprises and new acquaintances who can eliminate his previous impressions about life’s pleasures. “A Million Little Pieces” is a challenge of a film—the kind of jolt that can help audiences handles their problems and bad habits, too.

Bad Boys for Life

In English with Russian subtitles. A continuation of Michael Bay’s action franchise, about two unstoppable cops, Marcus Burnett and Mike Lowry. After long years of serving together, the friends’ paths diverge. Burnett quits the force and starts as a private detective, Lowrey must deal with a new partner, and both go through personal crises. But when an Albanian killer starts hunting for them in order to avenge his brother’s death, the bad boys must forget their old wounds and become a team again.

11:40. Drama, Comedy, Biography. France 2019, 107 min. Directed by Pierre-Francois Martin-Laval. Starring: Isabelle Nanty, Gerard Depardieu, Assad Ahmed, Mizanur Rahaman. In French with Russian subtitles. The film tells the story of a young chess player, junior world champion Fahim Mohammed. Together with his father, he leaves his native Bangladesh and moves to France. In their attempt to get political asylum, they encountered many difficulties. However, Fahim was lucky enough to makes the acquaintance of Sylvain, one of the best chess coaches in France. Beginning from mutual distrust, they became true friends. Faced with the threat of deportation, Fahim understood that he had only one chance at redemption: becoming the French champion.

Little Women

The Lighthouse

A hypnotizing and enthralling story about the dark depths of the human soul, from the creator of “The Witch.” The 1890s. The young Ephraim Winslow comes to a remote, rocky island to work as an assistant to the lighthouse keeper. His boss, Thomas Wake, is an old seaman, a lonely and strange man who totters on the edge of insanity. Over the four weeks that they spent together isolated from the whole world, the two men’s strange relationship shift from friendship to mutual hatred many times, and by the end of his service, Ephraim won’t be the same man he was before.

In French with Russian subtitles. Myriam, a young mother of two small children, decides to go back to work in spite of her husband Paul’s objections. The couple looks for a nanny and finds Louise, an irreproachable, experienced and caring candidate. She quickly wins the children’s affection and becomes an integral part of the family. But gradually, lonely Louise’s attachment to the young family grows into an unhealthy obsession, and in their cozy nest, a true catastrophe is brewing. This shocking thriller is a screen adaptation of Leila Slimani’s bestseller, winner of the Prix Goncourt.

The Truth (La vérité)
19:15, 19:20. Drama. France, Japan 2019, 106 min. Directed by Hirokazu Koreeda. Starring: Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche, Ethan Hawke, Clementine Grenier, Manon Clavel, Alain Libolt. In French with Russian subtitles. The legendary Catherine Deneuve plays faded film star Fabienne, who remains a strong personality in spite of her age and makes people take her seriously. When she publishes her memoirs under the title “La vérité,” her daughter Lumir comes to Paris from New York with her family to celebrate the event and remind everyone that there’s actually not a word of truth in the book. She gets into a confrontation with her mother in order to shed light on the embellished past. Fabienne has no time for family feuds: she’s getting ready for a new role. In a strange way, however, it becomes a reflection of her actual life.

Theatre HD Live in Cinema: Le Corsaire
19:30. Ballet to the music by Adolphe Adam. 200 min (with two intermissions). Libretto by Jules Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Joseph Mazilier edited by Marius Petipa. In English and French with Russian subtitles. This ballet, inspired by Byron’s poem, tells the story of the love between a pirate and a beautiful slave-girl. The action takes place against the backdrop of the open sea, in remote grottoes, amid the hustle and bustle of an eastern bazaar, and the languid luxury of a sultan’s harem. The duels and kidnappings are thrilling, but it is Marius Petipa’s timeless choreography that really delights. This romantic, oriental masterpiece, first performed in Russia in 1858, has been returned to the repertoire by the Mikhailovsky Theatre’s Ballet Master in Chief, Mikhail Messerer.
