Lil’ Buck: Real Swan
19:30. Documentary. France 2019, 85 min. Directed by Louis Wallecan. In English with Russian subtitles. Street dance and classical ballet combine incredibly organically in the work of Lil’ Buck, a rising start of contemporary dance. Louis Wallecan’s documentary opens a door into the world of Jookin, a dance tradition of skater and rap cultures that was born on the streets of Memphis. It was there, from dance battles and parking lot rehearsals, that Lil’ Buck’s path to world fame began: to millions of views of his videos with world-famous cellist Yo Yo Ma, filmed by Spike Jonze. The talented boy from Memphis became a part of Madonna’s show, performed at Fondation Louis Vuitton, and was filmed as part of a Mikhail Baryshnikov video and in ads for Apple and Versace. But it is in the ballet studio that Lil’ Buck uses his natural flexibility completely, moving such that audiences have only one question: “how does he do it?”
