A Rainy Day in New York

Can one rainy day change your life forever? Only Woody Allen can answer that question with his trademark melancholic humor and wise irony. A pair of young, pretty students come to New York for the weekend. She is a timid Arizona native who is supposed to do an interview with a famous film director for her university newspaper. He was born and raised on the Upper East Side and wants to show the girl the romantic New York that she has only ever seen in films. But the events of the day pull them in different directions, introduce them to new people, bring dreams to life and offer temptations that are so difficult to resist in this city — especially when you’re still so young.

Marianne is a young artist who is commissioned to paint a portrait of Heloise, a rich heiress from Briittany. The portrait is a wedding gift for the groom that her parents have chosen for her, and Heloise refuses to pose. Marianne arrives at their estate as chaperone in order to take Heloise for long walks along the seashore by day and draw her in secret at night. But the more time the girls spend together, the more their mutual attraction grows. The portrait becomes an act of liberation and witness to their love, doomed to fade quickly from the face of the earth but remain forever in their hearts. The film won best screenplay at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival.

A film adaptation of a Stephen King story released exactly 25 years ago tells the seemingly simply story of the unfairly sentenced Andy Dufresne, who managed not to lose his strength of will for 20 years in prison didn’t break down, kept his honor, and was ultimately able to make a bold escape that seemed impossible. But the simplicity of the form hides a deep, inspiring drama about the strength of the human spirit, friendship, unbreakable hope, and true freedom. This film, topping the IMDB and Kinopoisk best-of-all-time lists, is returning to the big screen.

The second film by Yang Ge — Gogol Center actress, singer, artist, and participant in the sixth season of Golos (Voice) — tells a universal story about love and jealousy in the big city. Margo teaches Chinese at a university and lives with George, a devout Catholic, who is devotedly in love with her. But she begins to feel constrained in this marriage, she cheats on her husband with her student, Anton, and wants to leave her husband for him. However, George tries with all his might to keep his wife, and is even ready to convert her to Catholicism in order to do so, while Anton’s poverty doesn’t allow him to make grown-up decisions. Margo is torn between two men and God, finding no solace in any of them.
