A famous actress gets a desperate message from a provincial girl, asking for help because her conservative parents are keeping her from applying to the conservatory. Together with the director, who plays himself, the film star sets out in search of the girl. They travel by car through the villages, meeting a wide spectrum of different people, listening to their stories and growing sadly and ironically certain that the people are holding onto their old traditions, while only the rarest brave ones decide to even dream about change. They subject Grace to all kinds of mental torture – and the register doesn’t take pity on anyone, be it his actors or his audience. But Trier is a great trickster, so in the finale, the story once again turns in a completely different direction and blows away everyone who had the strength to sit till the end.
