Theatre HD Live in Cinema: Iphigénie en Tauride
The Metropolitan Opera 2011, 115 min. Directed by Stephen Wadsworth. Starring: Susan Graham, Placido Domingo, Paul Groves. In French. Gluck’s gripping adaptation of the ancient Greek myth is vividly brought to life by a stellar cast in Stephen Wadsworth’s atmospheric production. Plácido Domingo is Oreste, driven by the Furies to atone for killing his mother Clytemnestre. When he and his companion Pylade (Paul Groves) are shipwrecked on the island of Tauride, the king Thoas (Gordon Hawkins) demands they be sacrificed. At the center of the drama is Iphigénie, Oreste’s long-lost sister, sung by the extraordinary Susan Graham. Forced to live among her enemies, she holds the lives of the captives in her hands—unaware that one of them is her brother. Watch online here.

National Theatre 2019, 198 min (with one interval). Directed by Rufus Norris. Starring: Leah Harvey, Aisling Loftus, Gershwyn Eustache Jnr. In English. Small Island embarks on a journey from Jamaica to Britain, through the Second World War to 1948 – the year the HMT Empire Windrush docked at Tilbury. The play follows three intricately connected stories. Hortense yearns for a new life away from rural Jamaica, Gilbert dreams of becoming a lawyer, and Queenie longs to escape her Lincolnshire roots. Hope and humanity meet stubborn reality as the play traces the tangled history of Jamaica and the UK. A company of 40 actors take to the stage of the National Theatre in this timely and moving story. Theatre HD Live in Cinema: The Madness of George III
Nottingham Playhouse 2018, 148 min (with one intermission). Directed by Adam Penford. Starring: Mark Gatiss, Adrian Scarborough, Debra Gillett. In English. Multi-award-winning drama The Madness of George III will be broadcast live to cinemas, in National Theatre Live’s first ever broadcast from Nottingham Playhouse. Written by one of Britain’s best-loved playwrights Alan Bennett (The History Boys, The Lady in the Van), this epic play was also adapted into a BAFTA Award-winning film following its premiere on stage in 1991. The cast of this new production includes Olivier Award-winners Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Wolf Hall, NT Live Coriolanus) in the title role, and Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey, Upstairs Downstairs, After the Dance). It’s 1786 and King George III is the most powerful man in the world. But his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic as he succumbs to fits of lunacy. With the King’s mind unravelling at a dramatic pace, ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince of Wales threaten to undermine the power of the Crown, and expose the fine line between a King and a man. But the ‘Merry Wives’ quickly cotton on to his tricks and decide to have a bit of fun of their own at Falstaff’s expense… The Merry Wives of Windsor is the only comedy that Shakespeare set in his native land. Drawing influences from 1930s British fashion, music and dance, this new production from Shakespeare’s Globe celebrates women, and the power and beauty of nature. With its witty mix of verbal and physical humour, the playcelebrates a tradition that reaches right down to the contemporary English sitcom. Directed by Elle While, the production stars Olivier Award-nominated Bryony Hannah (Call the Midwife, The Children’s Hour), Sarah Finigan (Suffragette, Upstart Crow) and Pearce Quigley (Hamlet, As You Like It) as Falstaff.
