Theatre HD Live in Cinema: At-Home Gala
The Metropolitan Opera 2020. Starring: Ildar Abdrazakov, Roberto Alagna, Piotr Beczała, Diana Damrau. In its most ambitious effort yet to bring the joy and artistry of opera to audiences everywhere during the Met’s closure, the company will present an unprecedented virtual At-Home Gala, featuring more than 40 leading artists performing in a live stream from their homes all around the world. The event will take place Saturday, April 25, at 1 p.m. EDT, and will be available for free on the Met’s website. General Manager Peter Gelb and Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin will host from their homes in New York City and Montreal, respectively. Mr. Nézet-Séguin will also participate in the gala as a pianist, and will be featured as conductor in pre-recorded performances by the Met Orchestra and Chorus, which will be created from individual takes from the homes of each of the musicians in the days leading up to the gala. After the live showing, the gala will continue to be accessible on demand on the Met website until 6:30 p.m. EDT the following day. The complete program will be announced shortly. The At-Home Gala is part of the Met’s urgent “The Voice Must Be Heard” fundraising campaign to support the company and protect its future. This gala is generously sponsored by Mercedes T. Bass and Rolex. Watch online here.

Theatre HD Live in Cinema: The Madness of George III
Nottingham Playhouse 2018, 148 min (with one intermission). Directed by Adam Penford. Starring: Mark Gatiss, Adrian Scarborough, Debra Gillett. In English. Multi-award-winning drama The Madness of George III will be broadcast live to cinemas, in National Theatre Live’s first ever broadcast from Nottingham Playhouse. Written by one of Britain’s best-loved playwrights Alan Bennett (The History Boys, The Lady in the Van), this epic play was also adapted into a BAFTA Award-winning film following its premiere on stage in 1991. The cast of this new production includes Olivier Award-winners Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Wolf Hall, NT Live Coriolanus) in the title role, and Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey, Upstairs Downstairs, After the Dance). It’s 1786 and King George III is the most powerful man in the world. But his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic as he succumbs to fits of lunacy. With the King’s mind unravelling at a dramatic pace, ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince of Wales threaten to undermine the power of the Crown, and expose the fine line between a King and a man. Theatre HD Live in Cinema: The Winter's Tale
Shakespeare's Globe 2018, 177 min (with one intermission). Directed by Blanche McIntyre. Starring: Will Keen, Oliver Ryan, Luke MacGregor. In English. In a fit of groundless jealousy, Leontes wrecks his marriage, defies the gods, destroys his family and ruins himself. As the years roll around, a new generation flee their own country and take refuge in Sicilia. Unknowingly they bring with them the key to the past, present and future… A ‘winter’s tale’ is a fantasy, and The Winter’s Tale is Shakespeare’s great play of the irrational and inexplicable. The play’s uncontrollable emotions – rage, love, grief and forgiveness – range across gender, country, class and age. Its universe is full of monsters, gods and natural disasters, and its colossal sweep takes us from stifling courts to unbuttoned festivals. Blanche McIntyre has recently worked at the Donmar Warehouse, the Royal Shakespeare Company and Chichester Festival Theatre. She directed The Comedy of Errors and As You Like It at the Globe in 2014 and 2015. Watch online here.
