Opera in two acts by Giuseppe Verdi. Rostov State Opera and Ballet production. Libretto by Temistocle Solera based on the play The Maid of Orléans by Friedrich von Schiller. Stage Director: Yuri Alexandrov. Conductor: Andrei Ivanov. Sung in Italian. Full of melodies, passion and pathos, Giovanna d’Arco, Verdi’s take on the Joan of Arc story and its legendary heroine, is regarded as one of the great composer’s early masterpieces. In Reims in 1429, Joan of Arc urges King Charles VII to do battle. For his seventh opera, Giuseppe Verdi built on the success of Nabucco and I Lombardi. The libretto of Giovanna d’Arco concentrates on the ‘here and now’ and on the main protagonist’s struggles. As a result, the historical events make way for impressive choral tableaux and a heroic musical characterisation of Giovanna. Bolshoi Theater |
