Dear Comrades! (Dorogie tovarischi!)
11:35, 17:45. Drama, History. Russia 2020, 121 min. Directed by Andrey Konchalovskiy. Starring: Yulia Vystoskaya, Sergey Erlish, Yulia Burova, Andrey Gusev, Vladislav Komarov. In Russian with English subtitles. The main character of the film is Lyudmila, a high-ranking employee of the Novocherkassk City Committee in 1962. The country has decided to raise prices on basic produce and home goods, and the city is exploding with discontent and rebellion. The heroine and her family are caught up in the whirlwind of the uprising and face something that she never wanted to experience. The premiere of Andrey Konchalovsky's new film was held at the Venice Film Festival, where the film was awarded the Special Jury Prize. However, "Dear Comrades!" should be interesting to Russian audiences first and foremost, as it tells about the painful and rarely covered topic of the Soviet past.

The Witches
11:20. Fantasy, comedy. USA 2020, 105 min. Directed by Robert Zemeckis. Starring: Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, Codie-Lei Eastick. In English with Russian subtitles. This is the story of an orphan boy who, in late 1967, moves to with his loving grandmother live in the rural town of Demopolis in Alabama. There they meet a beautiful witch. This new acquaintance comes right in time, as the witches are preparing a grand conspiracy. A new film adaptation of the classic book by Roald Dahl, this time from Robert Zemeckis.

The Metropolitan Opera 2010, 215 min. Directed by Nicolas Hytner. Starring: Roberto Alagna, Marina Poplavskaya, Simon Keenlyside. In Italian. Director Nicholas Hytner, who made his Met debut with this production, brings out all the passionate intensity that is at the heart of Verdi’s monumental drama. Don Carlo (Roberto Alagna), the Spanish crown prince, and Elizabeth of Valois (Marina Poplavskaya), daughter of the King of France, fall in love, only to be torn apart by international politics when Carlo’s father, King Philip II (Ferruccio Furlanetto), decides to marry Elizabeth himself. Carlo’s friend, Rodrigo (Simon Keenlyside), plays a dangerous game, balancing his political aims with the trust of his monarch. And when the beautiful Princess Eboli (Anna Smirnova) discovers her love for Don Carlo is not returned, her revenge terribly backfires. Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts the Met orchestra and chorus. Tenor Jonas Kaufmann is riveting as the title character of Gounod’s popular opera, seen in this Live in HD presentation of Des McAnuff’s thrilling 2011 production that places the mythical and timeless story in an early 20th-century setting. René Pape as Méphistophélès is menacing and elegant in equal measure, and Marina Poplavskaya delivers a searingly intense portrayal of the innocent Marguerite. Russell Braun as her brother, Valentin, shines in his Act II aria. On the podium, Yannick Nézet-Séguin brings out all the lyricism and drama of Gounod’s score. Watch online here.

Middle-aged filmmaker Josh Srebnick (Ben Stiller) and his wife, Cornelia (Naomi Watts), are happily married, but stuck in a rut. So, when free-spirited couple Jamie (Adam Driver) and Darby (Amanda Seyfried) enter their lives, it's like a breath of fresh air -- especially for Josh, who pines for a youth he wishes he had. Soon, Josh and Cornelia are ditching friends their own age to hang out with the hipsters -- but whether the friendship can endure despite a 20-year age gap remains to be seen.
