Founded in 1946, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra is Vienna's leading chamber ensemble and over the years has attained recognition as one of the finest chamber orchestras in the world. With Heinrich Schiff as Principal Conductor and Joji Hattori as Associate Conductor, the orchestra continues its tradition for collaboration with artists in the dual role of conductor and soloist such as Lord Menuhin, Heinz Holliger and its lifetime honorary conductor Philippe Entremont. Numerous additional artists have left their mark in concerts with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra. Most significantly, Sándor Végh engaged in a long and fruitful cooperation until his death in 1997. Conductors like Adam Fischer, Sir Neville Marriner, Jordi Savall or Peter Schreier; singers such as Cecilia Bartoli, Teresa Berganza, Rudolf Buchbinder, Gianluca Cascioli, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, Reinhold Friedrich, Helene Grimaud, Friedrich and Paul Gulda, Clemens Hagen, Lynn Harrell, Kiri Te Kanawa, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Oleg Maisenberg, Viktoria Mullova, Gianandrea Noseda, Emmanuel Pahud, Thomas Quasthoff, Julian Rachlin, Janine Jansen, Vadim Repin, Maxim Vengerov, Richard Stoltzman, Stefan Vladar and Thomas Zehetmair impressively document the artistic quality of this ensemble. Resident at the Vienna Konzerthaus, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra enjoys a busy concert schedule. In addition to its matinee subscription series in the Mozart-Hall, the orchestra participates in the prestigious "Symphonie Classique" series in the main hall of Konzerthaus. The orchestra also hosts the "International Prize-winner Series" introducing prize winners from the major international competitions to the audience in Vienna. Renowned for its versatility and variety of repertoire, the orchestra is involved in such diverse projects as the Silent Film Festival, "Wien modern", oratorios or concert-opera performances. However, it is for its performances of the Viennese classics that the orchestra is most celebrated and sought after. Its typically Viennese sound gives the orchestra an unmistakable character and the orchestra is frequently invited to appear throughout Austria and around the world. Few other orchestras can look back on such an extensive touring activity of over 70 countries! Zaryadye Concert Hall |
