14:10 Heart of a Dog
Documentary. USA, France 2015, 75 min. Directed by Laurie Anderson. Starring: Lollabelle, Archie, Jason Berg, Heung-Heung Chin. In English with Russian subtitles. A dreamy documentary that first seems to be world-known artist Laurie Andreson’s lament over her death of her beloved rat terrier Lolabelle, a dog whose boho West Village existence included painting lessons and a meditation teacher. However, there is something deeper than that in the movie, with Anderson narrating over a collage of 8mm home video, iPhone footage, canine-level camera, and animation. When Lou Reed’s resonant “Turning Time Around” comes on the soundtrack, it becomes clear that telling the story of her cherished dog has been a way of mourning the loss of someone else than her pet. A magical meditation on love and death, as well as a celebration of life to enjoy while we’re still here.

Microbe and Gasoline
20:30, 20:40. Comedy. France 2015, 105 min. Directed by Michel Gondry. Starring: Ange Dargent, Théophile Baquet, Diane Besnier, Audrey Tautou. In French with Russian subtitles. As part of the June installment of “At the Cinema, At Last,” Pioner presents the Russian premiere of Michel Gondry’s brilliant new film, “Microbe and Gasoline”. This is an unbelievable adventure story about two friends, nicknamed “Microbe and Gasoline,” who set off on a summer trip in a handmade car straight out of a fairytale. Here you can find everything that we love Gondry for: lightness and complete freedom, spontaneous humor and playfulness of imagination, and most importantly, a surprising and fragile handmade world, which Gondry first took for a spin in “The Science of Sleep” and “Be Kind Rewind.” “Microbe and Gasoline” has a magical effect of returning us to our lost childhood – a time, when anything was possible, though it may well have been too transient. One of the roles in the film was played by French star Audrey Tautou.
