International “Antiquarium” Music Festival
May 27 - June 03, 2007
Proun Gallery Proun Gallery

Historical performance practice which revives the performing traditions and instruments of the past came originally from Europe. But, being transplanted into the Russian cultural “soil”, it did not loose its attraction, and even more — got new impulses for the development and renovation turning for many of its fans into a sort of life philosophy. Its topicality is proved for the second time by the International “Antiquarium” Music Festival which got a reputation of a high-quality and intellectually provoking event of the Moscow music scene.

The main festival programme of this concert season present the musical art of the Western Europe from the late Middle Ages to the romantic epoch. Here it will be possible to hear the lyrics of Guillaume de Machaut — the «last trouvere», a brilliant court cavalier and idol of French ladies (Modus Ensemble, 27 May); to view the amazing transformations of musical ideas in time and space of the old Europe performed by the famous group Armonico Tributo Austria (29 May); to hear the music which used to be heard while Louis The Sun has been going to sleep (Lorenz Duftschmid, viola da gamba and Rolf Lislevand, theorbo); to appraise the elegant sounding of the early keyboard instruments in the exclusive concert cycle performed by the best Russian keyboard players of the new generation (31 May, 1 and 2 June); to enjoy the magnificence of the Royal musical entertainments performed under direction of Maestro Paul Esswood, singer of Her Majesty (3 June).

The best performers from the UK, Norway, Austria, Germany, Russia and The Netherlands who was adopting the traditions of historical performance practice just from its founders — Nikolaus Hornancourt, Jordi Savall, Hopkinson Smith, Eugene Domboius — will appear with their concert programmes during the festival. Special interest of the festival is its instrumental collection featuring the authentic string, wind and keyboard instruments from the 5 centuries of the European musical culture.

The Festival is supported by: The Austrian Cultural Forum in Moscow, The Royal Embassy of Norway, The Norwegian Information Center, «Purple Legion». Official Partners: Hotel “Sretenskaya”, «Tsvetlandia» — a flower company.

Festival programme:

May 27, 20:00
Opening of the Festival: "Douce Dame" Modus Ensemble (Norway).
Tendency for the unrealizable, refined variety of elements, details, lines which are interlaced with one another into the intricate pattern — delicacy of meanings and gestures reached its pick in the late Middle Ages. New moduses, new rhythms, new possibilities — all this has been discovered to the Europeans by the aesthetics of Ars Nova. These ideas were realized by the poet, historian, theologian and composer Guillaume de Machaut, a master of melancolic compositions featuring intimacy and aristoctacy of their tone. www.modusensemble.no

May 29, 20:00
"Transformations" Gerlinde Samann, soprano. Armonico Tributo Austria. Directed by Lorenz Duftschmid. Falconiero, Merula, Schmelzer, Kapsberger, Marais, Purcell, etc.
Central idea of the programme is stylistic transformtions in the European music, from the late Middle Ages to the Baroque. Strict chants of the past centuries turned into light dancing melodies, as time passed. The mystics of "? Sacrum Convivium" by Thomas Aquinas dissolved in the charming 17th century love song composed by Merula. And sefardic music — music of Jewish communities which were drove away from Spain in 1492, — still did not loose its spiritual power to date. www.armonicotributo.com

May 31, 18:00
"Gallantries and follies" Olga Filippova, harpsichord (Russia). Forqueray, Rameau, etc.
Strictly limited but also full of paradoxes and theatre elements world of French harpsichord music from the times of Louis XV will be open for the audiences as a series of designing stories, told and played by one of the most bright Russian harpsichordists of the young generation.

May 31, 20:30
"Night Concert for the Sun King" Lorenz Duftschmid, viola da gamba (Austria), Rolf Lislevamd, theorbo (Norway). Marais, Gaultier, Visee, Hume, Forqueray, De Caix d’Hervelois.
The dialoque of two baroque instruments — viola da gamba and theorbo — will be performed by two famous European masters of period performance. Ephemeral and dreamy, or charming by the elegance of their texture, the musical images of this unusual programme develop from the poetic inventiveness of the Renaissance “musica reservata” to the melancholy manner of rococo.

June 01, 20:00
"In the Shadow of C.PH.E. Bach" Sergey Kasprov, pianoforte (Russia). C. Ph. E. Bach, Mozart, Haydn.
Thinking of «The Great Bach» the 18th century musicians were meaning not Johann Sebastian but one of his sons — Carl Philip Emmanuel, a «Berlin Bach» who was a court harpsichordist for the Prussian king. While listening to his music with its “electrified” style it is easy to understand why all his contemporaries admired his genius so much. He was that very composer to create a new musical language for the generation of “Sturm und Drang” — a language for the “theatre of soul” of noble and enlightened mankind.

June 02, 20:00
"Lost Spaces" Piotr Aidu, romantic piano (Russia). Music by the composers of the 19th century.
When the piano has been developing there were a lot of models of the instruments that belonged to various traditions of instrumental making — such as Viennese, English, French ones. Each maker tried to find his own solution. English «Collard & Collard piano» was found by Piotr Aidu accidentally a few years ago, and it had a surprisingly good condition though experienced a number of wars and a revolution. This rare 1870 autentic non-standard piano (with half-round keys and porcelain rollers) will be heard in the concert.

June 03, 20:00
Closing of the Festival: "The Royal Entertainments: in the Theatre and at Court" Pratum Integrum Orchestra (Russia). Artistic derector — Pavel Serbin. Soloist and conductor — Paul Esswood, counter-tenor (UK). Guest appearance by Tatiana Divakova, mezzo-soprano (Russia). Handel.
This programe is a «snapshot» of musical life in London in the early 18th century when the German born Handel made the great impact upon his audience which has lasted until the present day. Paul Esswood, counter-tenor, will sing arias from his Oratorios and Operas and conduct the Water Music as composed for King George I and performed on the river Thames. www.pratum.ru, www.esswood.co.uk
