July 1, 14:00
Arkhangelskoye Estate Arkhangelskoye Estate

An annual open-air festival "Usadba Jazz - 2017", the most eminent jazz festival in Russia, will hold on July 1st, at the Arhangelskoe Estate Museum in Moscow. It will be the fourteenth time Moscow sees this festival, and this time "Usadba Jazz" is turning international with world jazz stars from France, USA, Norway, Denmark, Israel, Australia, Estonia. Among of them: Nino Katamadze & Insight (Georgia), Ester Rada (Israel), Nils Petter Molvaer Band (Norway), Raul Midon (USA), Ezra Collective (UK). Russia will be presented by Manizha, Alexei Kozlov and "Arsenal" band, Alexei Chumakov, Pompeya, Big Jazz Orchestra of Petr Vostokov and many others. Traditional and experimental jazz, funk, rock, electronic, independent music, and also an exhibition of art-objects, a space for poetic readings, sport and children games, food market and a lot of other entertainments, green lawns, soft July sun - this is what "Usadba Jazz", the largest and most modern jazz festival in Russia. Visitors may expect premiers, exclusive projects, bright traditions and excellent mood of the wonderful musicians and gorgeous public. Some conceptual stages are separated by styles and genres. "Parter", a spontaneous and multi-style stage, encompasses a variety of music from jazz-rock to world music. "Aristocrat", a slightly more sophisticated and exquisite stage, features classics, jazz standards and contemporary jazz. "Indicator" is the stage for independent musicians from all over the world.

Parter stage:
The key event of the festival will be the first Russian performance of Ester Rada, actress and singer from Israel with Ethiopian origin. In her work, jazz, r'n'b, soul, funk and sorcerous vocals blended in the best traditions of Nina Simon and Ella Fitzgerald. The special set will also play the mascot of the Usadba Jazz Nino Katamadze & Insight - the Georgian singer performed at the festival in Moscow 10 times. A special program will be presented Alexei Chumakov.

Ester Rada's cross-cultural sound is a deep reflection of the Israeli born Ethiopian’s heritage. Growing up in a highly religious Jewish family in more than modest conditions in Israel, gave Rada the drive to change her way of life and fulfill her dream of creating music. Critics describe her genre mixing sound as "gracefully combining Ethio-Jazz, funk, soul and r&b, with mixed undertones of black grooves". In 01 November 2012 Ester released her acclaimed first self-written and composed solo EP called "Life Happens" produced by Israeli producers Kuti (Kutiman/Thru-You) and Sabbo (Soulico). Shortly after releasing her EP the world discovered the potential of singer, songwriter, performer, and persona Ester Rada. Ester’s increasing popularity saw her tour the Us, Canada, and Europe, and most recently the highly respected Glastonbury Festival. She warmed up for Alicia Keys at her Israel concert, in front of 8500 people, receiving amazing critics from Alicia herself saying, "She is amazing". Her video "Life Happens" is aired these days on MTV France, East Europe, and Israel, as well as on Vh1 UK. With strong influences from early 20th century soul power women such as Nina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin; as well as a great appreciation for more contemporary black diva’s like Eryka Badu, Lauryn Hill, and Jill Scott; Rada is bringing a new voice to soul that is already spreading worldwide. Music critics are hailing her songwriting, performance, and release, and more great things are about to come.

Aristocrat stage:
The main stars of the most refined venue will be the Norwegian nu-jazz trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær and the New York soul singer and guitarist Raul Midon. Midon, blind from birth, was proclaimed a new jazz star after his debut performance in David Letterman's show and became famous for his collaboration with Shakira, Julio Iglesias and Herbie Hancock. The Big Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Peter Vostokov will present the program "Jazz in Butterflies", and the legendary saxophonist Alexei Kozlov will perform with his band "Arsenal".

Nils Petter Molvær Band. Nils Petter Molvær (born September 18 1960 in Sula, Norway) is a Norwegian trumpet player, composer and producer, who connects multiple music styles - jazz, ambient, house, electronic and break beats, as well as elements from hip hop, rock and pop music - and melts them into convincing soundscapes of deep intensity. Often eclectic, Molvær's style is similar to avant-garde trumpeter Toshinori Kondo. His interest in both acoustic and electric music shows the ease with which he handles the conventions of pop, rock and funk, alongside those of modern jazz. Molvær completed his debut album as a leader in 1997, Khmer, which focuses on a previously unknown blend of improvisation and hypnotically spinning beats, receiving extraordinary public and media response, and was honoured with the German Record Critics Award and a Norwegian Grammy. The follow-up to Khmer, released in May 2000 entitled Solid Ether, intensified Molvær's dialogue with club culture. The idea behind the Solid Ether concept is that a piece of music is never really finished and that composing and producing are an ever-evolving process. "'Ether' does not exist, so how can it be solid? It's a paradox - like life". Molvær's album NP3, released in 2002, sees him continuing the concepts that were developed through Khmer and Solid Ether by putting significant differing elements together to combine contrasting structures. A strong presence on NP3 is Molvær's soulful and creative use of new music manufacturing technology. In 2006 Thirsty Ear took the honors for Molvær's An American Compilation, a record that was meant to introduce a United States audience to the experimental and genre-bending musician. Thirsty Ear put out his studio albums Hamada (2009) and Baboon Moon (2011) before he signed to OKeh for 2014's Switch. Buoyancy followed in 2016.

Raul Midón is a contemporary singer/songwriter whose impassioned acoustic guitar playing -- a mix of rock, classical, and flamenco -- has gotten him just as much attention as his smooth, relaxed voice. Blind since birth, Midón was born in Embudo, New Mexico, to an Argentine father and American mother. He began playing drums early in his childhood before switching to guitar, taking in flamenco, jazz, and classical styles on his chosen instrument. He relocated to Miami for college in the '90s and while there moonlighted as a background vocalist for Latin pop recording sessions. Midón was a remarkable talent even then, and word quickly spread of his talent as a singer and guitarist, one inspired by a crop of artists including Hermeto Pascoal, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, and Bill Withers. As a solo artist, Midón made his debut on RCA with Gracias a la Vida (1999), after which he relocated to New York, where he concentrated on a solo career. Following the independent release Blind to Reality (2001), he signed with the EMI-distributed Manhattan label and released State of Mind (2005) and World Within a World (2007). The former featured appearances from Stevie Wonder and Jason Mraz and cracked the Billboard 200 chart. A short stint with Decca produced Synthesis (2010), highlighted by a cover of the Beatles' "Blackbird"; the same year, a performance in support of Marcus Miller was documented on A Night in Monte Carlo. Invisible Chains: Live from NYC (2012), self-released, preceded an association with Mack Avenue subsidiary Artistry for Don't Hesitate (2014) and Bad Ass and Blind (2017).

Pompeya is a four-piece indie pop and rock band based in Moscow, Russia. Their music is often described as bright and breezy, a mix of '70s disco, '80s new wave and '90s pop rock. The band formed in 2006 with members Daniil Brod, Denis Agafonov and Nairi Simonaian, and later, Sasha Lipisky. They self-released their debut EP Cheenese in Russia in 2010, followed by a full-length album Tropical in 2011. The band toured extensively in Eastern Europe. This was followed by showcases at SXSW, a full U.S. tour, and the release of new singles from Pompeya's Night EP, which was fully released worldwide on June 17.
