Michelangelo: The Creation
September 03 - December 01
Artplay na Yauze Artplay na Yauze

Michelangelo: The Creation	A new sensational multimedia show entitled "Michelangelo. The Creation" will open at Moscow's Artplay Design Center on September 5, 2015. The exhibition will be, for the first time, bring alive Michelangelo's masterpieces as the artist's magnificent frescoes from the Sistine Chapel ceiling as well as The Last Judgement, painted during the Renaissance era on the altar of the Chapel, will be projected onto large screens. The show will also feature other works by the Italian genius while a full-sized replica of his David will be installed at the entrance to Artplay from the Yauza embankment.

The exhibition is brought to you by Artplay Media, a new department of the Artplay Design Center set up to produce projects in new media genre. The format is a fusion of multimedia technology and cinema which appeals to the public of all ages. Technology, used while preparing the exhibition, includes multichannel graphic animation, dozens of state-of-the-art HD video projectors, large screens and 3D audio. Earlier this year, Artplay Media debuted its The Great Modernists show, which went on to become a huge success both with reviewers and audiences. More than 150,000 people have graced the show since it opened in February to critical acclaim. The show has now embarked on a tour of Russia making its first stop in Samara, some 850 km southeast of Moscow.

Artplay Media's new project at this juncture is featuring works by Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni, one of the greatest Renaissance masters, who was called Il Divino ("the divine one") during his lifetime and who changed Western European art forever. His ingenious artistic works spanned sculpture, painting, architecture and even poetry, but one of his most striking masterpieces is no doubt the frescoes he executed in Vatican City's Sistine Chapel. Michelangelo's paintings in the Chapel tell the whole story of mankind's biblical journey from the Creation to the Judgement Day. The ceiling paintings cover an area of over 500 square meters and depict more than 300 figures. The centerpiece of the art contains nine Old Testament scenes divided into three groups - God creating the Heavens and the Earth, God creating the first woman and man and their consequential Fall from grace, and the plight of Humanity, represented by the family of Noah.

Michelangelo created his own picture of the universe on the vault of the Chapel - his frescoes are a hymn to physical and spiritual beauty, an assertion of God’s boundless creative ability as well as that of man whom God created in his image and likeness. The Creation of Adam is Michelangelo's best-known fresco panel in the Sistine Chapel. The image of the near-touching hands of God and man became an iconic symbol of Renaissance, still reproduced in popular culture and even in advertising. The Sistine Chapel is visited daily by up to 10,000 people. Such a high turnout combined with the high ceiling makes it difficult for visitors to fully appreciate Michelangelo's masterpiece.

"Michelangelo: The Creation" show will give its visitors the chance to see the spectacular artwork in every detail and fully realize just how impressive the Italian master's titanic effort was without getting a stiff neck. The show will not leave you disappointed even if you have been to the Chapel and saw the frescoes with your own eyes. Augmented by cutting-edge visual effects and accompanied by music by the likes of Bach, Handel and Mozart, Michelangelo's world-famous images are brought to life on large screens to compose a flamboyant, emotionally charged show that would reintroduce the artist's legacy to the public while also giving Michelangelo's admirers a fresh and surprising take on his masterpieces. The exhibition will also give you the chance to brush up your knowledge of the epoch Michelangelo lived and worked in.

The entrance hall of the show will provide insights into just how art was made during the Renaissance - visitors will learn how a block of marble turns into a sculpture, they will be able to experience for themselves carve a stone with sculpting tools and will see what it takes to make a fresco, as well as get an idea about how replication is done. The exhibition will feature replicas of Michelangelo's famous Slaves, who seem to be struggling to wrest out of the stone, while a full-sized replica of David, one of the world's best-known sculptures, will greet visitors at the entrance to Artplay from the Yauza embankment. If you ever get the notion of seeing all of Michelangelo's work first-hand you will have to make quite a voyage since his numerous masterpieces are scattered across Italy and beyond - the artist's work is on display in his native Florence, Rome, Milan, Bologna, London, Paris, Bruges and New York.

"Michelangelo: The Creation" show is a unique opportunity to see all of Michelangelo's key work - including architecture, painting and sculpture - in one place and get an insight into the genius of the Renaissance man.
