4V (Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia)
The Visegrad Group (also known as the "Visegrad Four" or simply "4V") reflects the efforts of the countries of the Central European region to work together in a number of fields of common interest within the all-European integration. The Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia have always been part of a single civilization sharing cultural and intellectual values and common roots in diverse religious traditions, which they wish to preserve and further strengthen. All the V4 countries aspired to become members of the European Union, perceiving their integration in the EU as another step forward in the process of overcoming artificial dividing lines in Europe through mutual support. They reached this aim in 2004 (1st May) when they all became members of the EU. The international jazz ensemble "4V" is comprised of its Polish founder and pianist Kuba Stankiewicz, along with some of Central Europe's finest jazz musicians: Slovakian guitarist and arranger, Matúš Jakabčic; Hungarian trumpeter, composer and arranger, Kornél Fekete-Kovács; Czech double bassist Jaromír Honzák - whose album Little Things won the award for Best Jazz Album 2009 and was released in collaboration with the Polski salon / Polish salon series - and Slovakian drummer Peter Solárik. The group's repertoire is formed from contributions by all of its constituent members. Stankiewicz's reputation as one of Poland's finest jazz pianists has been undisputed for a number of years. He distinguishes himself through an individual approach to composition, sensitivity for tone colour and an intuitive feel for dynamics and range. He made his professional debut playing in ensembles lead by Jan "Ptaszyn" Wróblewski and Zbigniew Namysłowski (1985-87), with whom he toured the USA and Mexico, also appearing on the records Open and Song of Innocence. He's a laureate of the Oscar Peterson Award and a semifinalist of the Thelonius Monk International Jazz Piano Competition, held in Washington, and his album Northern Song was voted Album of the Year in a survey by readers of Jazz Forum in 1993.
All Star Trio (USA)
All Star Trio comprises of Jimmy Cobb, Joey DeFrancesco and Larry Coryell. Legendary jazz drummer, Jimmy Cobb, is the elder statesman of all the incredible Miles Davis bands. Jimmy's inspirational work with Miles, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderly and Co. spanned from 1957 until 1963, and included the masterpiece "Kind of Blue", the most popular jazz recording in history. Larry Coryell deserves a special place in the history books as one of the pioneers of jazz-rock. He brought an alien sensibility to jazz electric guitar playing in the 1960s. As a true eclectic, armed with a brilliant technique, he is comfortable in almost every style, covering almost every base from the most distortion-laden electric work to the most delicate, soothing, intricate lines on acoustic guitar. At the age of 10, virtuoso Joey DeFrancesco was playing gigs with legendary musicians like Philly Joe Jones and Hank Mobley. After signing his first recording contract with Columbia Records at age sixteen, he joined Miles Davis' group in the late Eighties. The two-time Grammy Nominee, recognized as the Master of the Jazz Organ, has put out over 20 recordings as a leader and continues to collaborate with some of the top names in modern jazz. Joey DeFrancesco is one of the jazz scene's true trailblazers.

L.Vintskevich features with such jazz masters as Lembit Saarsalu, Elvin Jones, Lionel Hampton, Kevin Mahogany, Valery Ponomarev, Evelyn White, John Stowell, Conrad Herwig, Eve Cornelious, Jutta Glasger, Jarmo Hiekkala and many others. The pianist's brilliant technique and creativity, his remarkable "explosive" style, daring, impudent outlook and emotionality were highly appraised by the public and the critics. Leonid Vintskevich takes part in the most celebrated jazz festivals in Europe, Russia, USA and the countries of CIS: Prague, Jazzbuehne in Berlin, Jazztage in Leipzig, the JVS North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague, the Lionel Hampton/Chevron Jazz Festival, Baltic Jazz, Turku Jazz Festival, Jazz Kaar, Kaamus Jazz, Silda Jazz and others. Blended 328 (USA)
Crashing on the Nashville music scene in December of 2011 Blended 328 quickly became a local favorite, performing sold out shows at venues like The Hard Rock Cafe, MTSU, The Bluebird Cafe and 12th & Porter. In January, Blended 328 was chosen "What's Hot for 2012" by Campus Activities Magazine and began touring the college circuit. The Nashville Scene has described Blended 328 as "Country music for the World". The band sincerely has a global vision to initiate positive change in the world by breaking down racial barriers and promoting equality, respect, inclusion and peace through country music. The band puts on an exceptional live show consisting of upbeat originals, modern country - Carrie Underwood, Miranda Lambert, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton Etc., and old school R & B - Michael Jackson, Nelly, Justin Timberlake, Rick James, Usher, Prince, The Temptations Etc. In each set they also get the audience involved with games like train wreck karaoke with the band, dance contests and The Limbo Rock. "Blended 328 represents the precise richness and diversity of American Culture we seek to promote abroad. Your music, talent and message represent our country well" (Earl Anthony Wayne US Ambassador to Mexico). "Very High Energy! Best Show we've ever had at our Summer Concert Series" (Southern Illinois University Student Council Student Council). "Cool Show. Great vibe tunes. You brought it" (MTSU Student Council). Parne Gadge (the Netherlands)
Parne Gadje are Marc Constandse - banodoneon, vocals & percussion; Gerwil Kusters - clarinets, saxophones; Michiel Hollanders - resonator guitar, velofoon and various string instruments; Dan Tuffy - fietsbandbas, electric and acoustic guitars; Michiel Bakkes-de Vries - tapan and percussion. Parne Gadje play a whirling emotional concoction of Macedonian Rembetikas, Roma ballads and Middle Eastern dirges. How can we best describe it - Balkan improvisations? Bosporus blues? It doesn't matter. One listen and the question on everyone's lips is "Where the hell does this stuff come from!" There is heart in this music and that's what counts. Set alight by front man Marc Constandses' masterful bandoneon playing and red-blooded approach to interpreting the tunes, the instrumentation (bandoneon, guitar, banjo, dobro, self-built bicycle-tire bass, velofoon, clarinet, saxophone violin and a host of unusual percussive sounds) is unconventional but blindingly effective. An absolute must for anyone who has had the good fortune to be touched by the magnificent labyrinth of Balkan underground folk variations. Class, depth and beauty. "Dervish sufi's whirl in a trance to reach higher planes. Less austere types lean towards hash and alcohol to attain a state of elevation. Significantly, Turkish sufi's will often gather in a place known as a "Tekke" which, strangely, is also what the Greek hash dens are called; those havens for stranded immigrants and outcasts in search of solace in music, the pipe and comradeship. Parne Gadje's sound is like a "Tekke", a meeting place for wandering souls looking to escape, if only for a moment, the everyday madness of the world. The groups music, with its origins in Afghanistan, Macedonia, Greece, Hungary and Anatolia, has its roots firmly in the ground but it is full of longing for higher places as well. Listening to the groove and drive of the fietsbandbas, the incantations of the Turkish pipes and velofoon, and the raw heartfelt singing of Marc Constandse, a feeling begins to grow. Embrace life fully, in all its beauty and torment!" (text by Saskia Tornqvist).
Jungle by Night (the Netherlands)
Jungle by Night is like a spark. They shine a radiating light that can be felt when the band is on stage and this glow finds its way from their record into your heart too, like a durable source of energy that never seems to end. With enthusiasm, sweat, funk, history, this spark jumps up and right back down again and never seem to stop shining. Jungle by Night consists of nine young lads from Amsterdam who use their musical upbringing, taste, backgrounds and unstoppable eagerness to produce a unique mix of Afrobeat, Ethiojazz, funk, dub and rock. The nine souls in Jungle by Night were acquainted through school, street and family bonds. Two years ago, the group seemed to be infected with a love for raw Africa oriented funk and retreated into the rehearsal studio. On a small outdoor festival in Amsterdam, a spark lit and hasn't gone out so far. The band was invited to perform as the opening act at concerts of Mayer Hawthorne and The Roots & John Legend. They were guests in Paris at shows of musical godfathers Mulatu Astatke, Orchestre Poly-Ritmo de Cotonou on holy Fela-ground. Former members of Fela Kuti's backing band witnessed Jungle by Night play and had instant admiration for the young men. "At the end of the night they called us "the future of afrobeat". Their words felt like a true blessing." Jungle by Night's debut EP was received with positive reviews. Dutch renowned music website 3VOOR12 said "This completely instrumental debut of Jungle by Night is a great album for the summer." Radio6 crowned the band Soul and Jazz talent and chose this EP as album of the week, just as 3VOOR12 did. Jungle by Night was invited to the popular daily TV show De Wereld Draait Door twice to fill the infamous one and a halve minute time slot. There wasn't a festival organizer unimpressed by Jungle by Night, so they were basically invited to all! Regardless if the festival was world music oriented like Music Meeting Nijmegen or Pole Pole Ghent, dance festivals like Pitch or Source, poppy like De Beschaving or Jazz minded like North Sea Jazz, Jungle by Night shook them all and conquered the hearts, minds and souls of the crowds. And of course they as well played Lowlands too, the largest festival in the Benelux. Kinkingthehabit.nl wrote on this performance: "Lowlands must be the climax of the Jungle by Night's triumphal march through the Netherlands. This performance was the highlight of the first day of the Lowlands."

Dustin Thomas (USA)
Big hair, big smiles, and a whole lot of love- these are just a few trademarks of traveling singer-songwriter Dustin Thomas. Appearances aside, the music of Dustin Thomas has captivated audiences from New York to Hawaii with "haunting vocals and soulful depth" packaged nicely in his fun, sometimes poignant, "catchy folk tunes." In his songs you'll hear the thoughts of an old soul in a young body: a conversation on current affairs, speckled with historical and political references ranging as far back as Alexander the Great's horse (Come on Bucephalus) or as current as Trayvon Martin and Troy Davis. In his songs you'll find the musings of new eyes observing the challenges of proletariat living. You'll hear a new spirit contemplating human relationships both spiritual and intimate. There is little hidden or veiled in his nursery rhyme prose, just honest questions and earnest stories of love, loss, worship and war. Back from Hawaii and currently living in Minneapolis, Dustin plans on touring the US this summer and is working on his debut album. "His uniqueness defies labels. If you need comparisons, he's a conduit for something spiritual and real, the way that the great Bob Marley was (and still is) or the way real issues were sung by, say, Tracy Chapman, whose stirring voice, by the way, seems to be echoing in Dustin" (Jason Smith, Big Island Weekly).
Hilderard Lernt Fliegen (Switzerland)
Founded in 2005 by singer and composer Andreas Schaerer, this Swiss sextet has already grown a beard and started to stay out late. Schaerer's compositions slip through any easy attempts at categorization as easily as a trout squirms free of a fisherman's hands. The group was finally brought ashore in 2007, when they released their first album for the Swiss label Unit Records. The reviews were glowing, sales were brisk, and the album had to be re-released after being sold out in a couple of months. Scholars can consult the sheet music here. Since then, the band has traveled thousands of kilometers on the Autobahn, drank many a liter of gas station coffee, and played more solos and refrains than they care to remember - on tours in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, and Slovenia. They’ve tickled the fancies of audiences and expert juries alike. In May 2008 the group won the ZKB Jazz Prize. The long and storied list of stages where Hildegard Lernt Fliegen has performed include many a jazz club and cabaret, but also festivals such as Jazznojazz Zürich, Cully Jazz, BeJazz Winterfestival, Offside Festival Geldern, Suisse Jazz Diagonales, Langnauer Jazz Nights, Dresdner Jazztage, and the Stanser Musiktage. November 2009 was no time for putting their feet up and relaxing by the fire. Au contraire, Hildegard had a date with destiny and was beaver-busy preparing their second album Vom fernen Klang der Sache appeared as a CD/picture-book designer by the Zurich-based illustrator Peter Baeder. Hildegard Lernt Fliegen made Russia their home in the fall of 2010. The group toured for two weeks through a landscape which seemed to have been painted just for them. Two stowaways on board - the filmmaker Michelle Brun and sound editor Martin Ruch - recorded the highlights of this Swiss-Soviet summit before locking themselves for a few months in an editing studio… Meanwhile, Hildegard continued touring, returning to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic.

Romain Thivolle Big Band (France)
Along the lines of the marvellous swing machines which experienced their golden age around the 1930s-40s (Duke Ellington, Count Basie), the Romain Thivolle Big Band stands out not only through its quality and the commitment of each of its soloists, but also through the originality of its repertoire, comprising compositions and arrangements written by Thivolle based on jazz standards, but also on masterpieces by Nougaro, The Police, The Beatles, Stevie Wonder and even Michael Jackson, rather unusual in such as context. As a brilliant finalist of such international competitions as "Jazz ā Juan Révélations" and "Scrivere in Jazz", Romain Thivolle Big Band released their debut album First Time in 2010 and the second one Kind of Pop in 2013. The "Usadba Jazz" festival has invited him this year with all the wealth of his "saxes".
Avishai Cohen Trio (Israel)
If "youth is the time we have ahead of us", Avishai Cohen hasn't lost his. He was born near Jerusalem, on 20 April 1970. At the age of 14, he left his homeland in order to follow in the footsteps of Miles Davis, his idol. On a one-way trip to Saint-Louis, then New York, he was to jam with Brad Mehldau and integrate the Afro-Cuban music community. In 1996, he joined Chick Corea and his new group Origin before finally gaining his independence, leading him to figure today among the top hundred most influential bass players of his generation, according to the very authoritative American monthly Bass Player. Double bass player, composer, leader and even singer (with a decidedly suave and sensual voice), Avishai Cohen exercises his free spirit to the full, embracing Oriental and Latin influences, handling classical music, flamenco and even pop! From Stevie Wonder to Gabriel Fauré, his difference makes him stand out and he has ensured brilliant performances alongside Roy Hargrove, Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Paquito D'Rivera and even Alicia Keys. He is one of those musicians who reinvent the future of a jazz which remains a fertile ground full of possibilities, "a jazz with Coltrane's lyrical touch, an inventive breakdown of the standards… The result is ingenious and yet not intentionally demonstrative; intense and yet coherent."

Mdungu (the Netherlands)
Mdungu is a nine piece band based in Amsterdam. The musicians from Holland, Luxembourg, Spain and Gambia bring their music with skill, flair and energy that is irresistible to any audience. African music by Mdungu is a strong musical experience: it funks, it grooves, it moves your feet and feeds your soul. The percussion is dazzling, the melodies enchanting and the vocals captivating, creating a chemical reaction that makes people start dancing and romancing. The moment Mdungu kicks off and the music takes over there is no future, no past. No borders, no passport. The groove is king, and that's the way it should be. Fall of 2011 Mdungu releases their second album titled Gambian Space Program. This new album is a true group effort of nine musicians working and growing extensively together. Since the release of their debut album Afro What!? they have toured intensively in Holland, but also abroad in a.o. Germany, Belgium, Ireland, Turkey, China and Korea. Gambian Space Program shows what the band is about today. African music is the point of departure, taking their sounds through many sideroads and galaxies and thus creating their own space where they like to be. Mdungu was founded in 2003 by alto saxophonist Thijs van Milligen. From the start Mdungu is a most welcome guest on international stages and festivals in the world music, pop and jazz scene. Afro What!? is Mdungu's debut album released in May 2009. The album was very well received in the Benelux and has been released in the rest of Europe in the fall of 2009. The recordings are mixed by producer/guitarist Justin Adams. Since the release of their debut album Mdungu toured intensively in Holland and abroad.
Caravan Palace (France)
Caravan Palace is a self-described électro-swing group from Paris, France, that made its full-length album debut in 2008. Comprised of Charles Delaporte (bass, programming), Arnaud Vial (guitar, programming), Hugues Payen (violin, programming), Colotis Zoé (vocals), Toustou (electronics, trombone), and Chapi (clarinette), the group is chiefly influenced by Django Reinhardt but also cites Vitalic, Cab Calloway, Justice, Lionel Hampton, and Daft Punk among its influences. With their "Zazou" look (inspired by Parisian paleo-punks from the 1940s), they serve up festive, frantic music, an improbable futuristic and melodious Charleston fit for the dance floor. Caravan Palace is to swing what the Gotan Project is to tango. Caravan Palace made their self-titled full-length album debut in 2008 on the French independent label Wagram Music. Promoted with the release of "Jolie Coquine" as a single, Caravan Palace was very well received, reaching the Top 20 of the French albums chart and garnering acclaim for its traditional jazz inclinations. Caravan Palace returned in 2012 with their sophomore album, Panic. Styluses will warm up with these fourteen pieces, resulting from two years of hard work. Look closely at the curves of their beats, the warmth of their swing, not to mention their legendary footwork, and you'll be hooked.

Lord Kelvin (Norway)
Lord Kelvin is a band consisting of two hornplayers and one drummer. Their debut record, Dances in the Smoke, contained 14 songs with free-rock, jazz, chambermusic and free-improvisation. They have shared the composing democratically between themselves. The Lord Kelvins are educated at the jazzdepartment of the conservatory of Trondheim in the middle of Norway, and they play in a great variety of bands. The bassless trio gives a lot of freedom, but also some challenges regarding composing the music. This results in some unusual solutions in the arrangements, and a whole lot of great new music. Erik Johannessen (b. 1975) from Oslo plays trombone in bands Jaga Jazzist, Trondheim Jazzorchestra, Loud Jazz Band and ÆÆ. Gard Nilssen (b. 1983) from Skien is an active drummer and can be heard in bands like Puma (Jazzintrowinner 2006), Bushman's Revenge og Humvee. Eirik Hegdal, Saxophones, (b. 1973) from Inderøya. He has written music for Trondheim Jazzorchestra on several acclaimed CD's, and a tour with Joshua Redman in Norway and Sweden. He plays in Zanussi 5 og Alpaca Ensemble as well. Radio Has No Future album was recorded in Skansen Lydstudio in Trondheim, and mixed and mastered by the great Morten Stendahl in Red Room Studio in Trondheim. Rune Nergaard has done the coverdesign and the albums title is a direct quote from Lord Kelvin himself from the late 1800's. "Lord Kelvin is - besides being the british 19th century mathematician and thermodynamicist behind the theory of abosolute zero- still saxophonist Eirik Hegdal, trombonist Erik Johannessen and drummer Gard Nilssen. Radio Has No Future is the trio's second album and picks up the pace from 2009's Dances in the Smoke with a lively set. The unusual line-up - no bass, no chord instruments except for some vibraphone (Nilssen) - moves in the range between hard grooves and fragile soundscapes, between melodies and "free blowing" and between bright and more subdued atmospheres. Or: jazz, rock, chambermusic - seperate and all at once. The repertoire on this suitelike album are (naturally) composed by the trio's members and equipped with titles that refers to the lord's life and scientific deeds. Still it's nowhere near programme music, rather an original constellation of musicians that with skilled and intelligent interaction, way above the absolute zero, plays their way out from the way we usually perceive the trio format with zing, robust elegance, and a considerable amount of their inspirer's lust for research as their drivingforce" (Terje Mosnes, Dagbladet).
Coast Stage
Jaga Jazzist (Norway)
Jaga Jazzist have become something of a musical phenomenon in Norway since they started 15 years ago. Not only is this 9 piece instrumental band regarded as one of the most exciting and innovative in Norway, the members are all involved in other musical projects and have in one way or another contributed to almost every significant recording to come out of that part of the world in the last few years. It has been this strong involvement with different projects and musical styles which is the key to the unique sound of Jaga Jazzist. With no boundaries and an arsenal that includes trumpet, trombone, electric guitars, bass, tuba, bass clarinet, saxes, keyboards, vibraphone and a rack of electronics, Jaga Jazzist create timeless music; melodic, hypnotizing, delicate and subtle. Jaga Jazzist started out in Tonsberg (a small town outside Oslo) in 1994 at which time Lars Horntveth (the main songwriter in Jaga) was only 14 years old! In 2001 they released their debut album 'A Livingroom Hush' on Warner in Scandinavia to massive critical acclaim and great sales (the album sold over 15000 copies in Norway alone...) Throughout 2002 the band shocked fans and critics alike with their blistering live shows, the buzz resulting in sold out dates all over Europe and bringing the band to the attention of Ninja Tune. At the same time that their debut album was gaining more and more international success, Jaga recorded the follow up titled The Stix, their first release for Ninja. As with their first album it was produced by Norwegian superproducer Jørgen Træen, the man behind Duper Studios in Bergen (home of Røyksopp, Kings of Convenience, Sondre Lerche et al), but this time Jaga wanted to push their musical limits even further and really create a sound they could genuinely call Jaga Jazzist. It was the perfect balance between (hu)man and machine, and it never lost the organic nature of a live 10 piece band.
DJ Tito (Spain)
DJ Tito has accomplished many things throughout his career as a DJ. He began to DJ with hip-hop at an early age of 15 with inspiration from local Bay Area radio mix Djs such as 106 KMELs Glenn Aure, and movies like Juice in which the DJ was the main focus. Soon after his start, DJ Tito moved with his family back to Loiza, PR were he got his first taste of underground which would be later known as reggaeton. Tito got invited to DJ a local Underground Reggaeton/Rap competition and from that first event, he quickly gained status and soon after was well known around Loiza for his underground parties. The likes of Hornyman, Original Q, Los Maliantes, and Las Guanabanas Podrias which are all pioneers to the reggaeton game, were artists that performed at various DJ Tito's parties by surprise appearances. After graduating High School, DJ Tito joined the military. He was sent to Texas, Oklahoma, and finally Alaska. In Alaska, Tito took what he had learned about music in all the various places he had been too, and applied it to his radio show Urban Beats which he hosted with fellow dj, Dj Alonzo on KRUA 88.1fm. With a variety of music knowledge in the areas of reggaeton, hip-hop, r'n'b, and dancehall, the show quickly became a hit. With his new found success, Tito decided to expand by exposing his work via his website DjTito.com to the world in 1999. At around the same time he finished his first mixtape which gained him status as DJ of the month for several months, for an online community of over thousands of DJs, formerly known as Fromdj.com. The mix attracted the attention of many people.
