La Scala Operas

Carmen
Georges Bizet's opera. A voluble man-eater? A hysterical, superstitious young woman? Regardless, this is a tragedy of love that plummets into an abyss alongside a Mediterranean male who is as possessive as he is uncertain. The result is spectacular. With music that is packed with wild outbursts and powerful, Latin colour, Georges Bizet provides an irresistible rendition of a showdown like something that might make headline news. His choice of poly-folkloristic music (Spanish, Tzigane and Cuban) draws us into the reign of burning passion. Conductor - Daniel Barenboim. Staging and Costumes - Emma Dante. Running time: 3 hours. Cast: Carmen - Anita Rachvelishvili, Don Jose - Jonas Kaufmann, Micaela - Adriana Damato, Escamillo - Erwin Schrott. In Italian with Russian subtitles.

Don Carlos
Giuseppe Verdi's opera in four acts. Composed at the apex of Verdi’s musical career, the dark Don Carlo describes the cruel world of the victims of authority during the Spanish inquisition. The Spanish infante is in love with his stepmother, while at the same time desired by his father’s lover. Philip II’s throne is itself controlled by the ecclesiastic power: the Great Inquisitor even obtains the sacrifice of his son and of his most loyal friend, Posa. The opera will be presented in its 1884 Italian-language version (the shortest of the five known versions), which Verdi composed for La Scala. Libretto by Francois-Joseph Mery and Camille Du Locle. Running time: 3 hours with 2 intervals. Conductor - Daniele Gatti. Staging and Sets - Stephane Braunschweig. Cast: Philip II - Ferruccio Furlanetto, Don Carlo - Stuart Neill, Rodrigo - Dalibor Jenis, The Grand Inquisitor - Anatoly Kotscherga. Elisabeth de Valois - Fiorenza Cedolins, Princess Eboli - Dolora Zajick. In Italian with Russian subtitles.

Orfeo
Claudio Monteverdi's opera. 24 February 1607 proved indeed “a happy and auspicious day”: it marked the premiere of Claudio Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo in the Ducal Palace in Mantua. It was the birth of a masterpiece and also the birth of opera as an art form. For this La Scala production, Italian early music specialist Rinaldo Alessandrini united with director Robert Wilson, who draw inspiration for his staging from a famous painting by Titian. Conductor - Rinaldo Alessandrini. Staging, Sets and Lights - Robert Wilson. Running time: 2 hours 10 minutes. Cast: Music - Roberta Invernizzi, Orpheus - Georg Nigl, Eurydice - Roberta nvernizzi, Messenger - Sara Mingardo, Hope - Sara Mingardo, Charon - Luigi De Donato, Proserpine - Raffaella Milanesi, Pluto - Giovanni Battista Parodi, Echo - Roberta Invernizzi, Apollo - Furio Zanasi. In Italian with Russian subtitles.

Tosca
Giacomo Puccini's opera. Live broadcasting! An opera of love and death set against the backdrop of the eternal city in the events following the fall of the late 18th century Roman Republic. On January 14, 1900 at Rome's Teatro Costanzi, the Puccinian masterpiece based on the namesake drama by Victorien Sardou first premiered. That same scenery by Hohenstein, recreated by Ettore Rondelli, can be admired in the performance staged at the Teatro Carlo Felice. direction and lights by Renzo Giacchieri, and conducted by the baton of Marco Boemi.
