Mieczysław Weinberg’s operas like “The Passager” or “The Portrait” are increasingly attracting the interest of a wide public and are being taken up in many opera houses around the world. His last opera “The Idiot”, completed in 1987, was given its world premiere in the original Russian version conducted by Thomas Sanderling and directed by Regula Gerber at the Mannheim National Theatre on 9 May 2013. The opera is based on the novel of the same name by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It tells of the story of suffering of Prince Myshkin, psychically very unstable and hopelessly in love in the beautiful Nastassia; he is entirely at the mercy of her delaying promises. The Oldenburg State Theatre has written the following: “With his opera "The Idiot", Weinberg created a fascinating music drama in a glowing musical language rooted in late romanticism and neoclassicism; incorporating elements of Russian folklore, it breathes life into Dostoevsky's characters."
