Theater production. UK 2009, 205 min. Directed by Dominic Dromgoole. Choreographed by Sian Williams. Music by Claire van Kampen. Starring: Philip Cumbus as Ferdinand, King of Navarre, Trystan Gravelle as Berowne, William Mannering as Longaville, Jack Farthing as Dumaine, Michelle Terry as The Princess of France. When the King of Navarre and his three courtiers forswear all pleasure - particularly of the female variety - in favour of a life of study, the arrival of the Princess of France and her ladies plays havoc with their intentions. Shakespeare's boisterous send-up of all those who try to turn their back on life, is a festive parade of every weapon in the youthful playwright's comic arsenal: from excruciating cross-purposes and impersonations, to drunkenness, bust-ups and pratfalls. Even more, it is a joyful banquet of language, groaning with puns, rhymes, bizarre syntax, grotesque coinages and parodies. Jonathan Fensom's knot garden and original music by Claire van Kampen create the framework for an engaging performance by an excellent cast. In English. Formula Kino Horizon |
