Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Sveshnikov State Academic Russian Choir, Alexander Knyazev (cello) and Anastasiya Sidorkina (organ) conducted by Yuri Simonov will perform Prokofiev's Symphony-concerto for violoncello and orchestra, Rachmaninov's Symphony #2, and Bodrov's "Kyrie Eleison" for symphony orchestra, choir and organ. The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1951 by Samuil Samosud, as the Moscow Youth Orchestra for young and inexperienced musicians, acquiring its current name in 1953. It is most associated with longtime conductor Kiril Kondrashin under whom it premiered Shostakovich's Fourth and Thirteenth symphonies as well as other works. The orchestra undertook a major tour of Japan with Kondrashin in April 1967 and CDs of the Japanese radio recordings have been made available on the Altus label. In 1998, Maestro Yuri Simonov, People's Artist of the USSR, became Music director and Principal conductor of MPO. His appointment marked a new era in the history of the orchestra. "What a fine orchestra the Moscow Philharmonic is! And what a predominantly young orchestra too! The orchestra displayed a full and rich sound - wonderful warm string tone, singing woodwinds, forceful and ringing brass and rampant percussion (when necessary). Simonov directed performances of the highest distinction," - wrote the British critic Bob Briggs. Alexander Knyazev is one of the most charismatic musicians of his generation performing as celloist and organist. He graduated from the Moscow Conservatory as celloist (class of Prof. A. Fedorchenko) and the Nizhny Novgorod Conservatory as organist (class of Prof. G. Kozlova). His concerts are successively performed in Germany, Austria, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Belgium, Japan, Korea, Brazil, Australia, the USA, etc. In 2005 he received the Ecko Klassik prize for the record of Rachmaninoff and Shostakovich music. In 2006 he also received Echo Klassik for his Tchaikovsky records, and in 2007 he was awarded the Echo prize for his CD with sonatas by Chopin and Rachmaninoff. Tchaikovsky Concert Hall |
