14:25 A Dog’s Purpose
Adventure/Comedy. USA 2017, 120 min. Directed by Lasse Hallström. Starring: Josh Gad, Dennis Quaid, Peggy Lipton, Juliet Rylance, Luke Kirby. In English with Russian subtitles. When viewed through a dog’s eyes, the world takes on an unfamiliar perspective. And a very simple question actually becomes the most important: what do they – the humans, that is – really want? Bailey, a lovely hunting dog, asks himself this more than once, since Ethan, his owner, is a pretty average boy: inquisitive and always ready for adventure. Bailey bears witness to Ethan’s growing up and misfortunes, but a dog’s life is, as a rule, shorter than a person’s. And in his next life, Bailey returns as a completely different dog. A new film by Swedish director Lasse Hallström, filmed with an eye toward his previous work: visible are “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (1993), “Hachiko: A Dog’s Story” (2009), or even “Chocolat” (2000). The surface is just as calm, the undercurrents are just as strong, and the fates of individual people play out in ways just as varied. Regardless of the procession of dogs of all different breeds, “A Dog’s Purpose” is a film first and foremost about people, as befits its title.

12:10 Beauty and the Beast
Musical/Fantasy. USA 2017, 129 min. Direced by Bill Condon. Starring: Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans. In English with Russian subtitles. In order to free her father, who has fallen under a curse, Beauty agrees to become a prisoner in a magical castle, where invisible servants instantly grant all of her wishes. The castle's owner, bewitched by a fairy for a lack of hospitality, is presented before Beauty in the form of a monster. With time, she learns to love this monster, the force of which alone can turn the Beast back into a prince. This new interpretation of a traditional European fairy tale, better known in Russian as "The Crimson Flower," was conceived of all the way back in 2014. Since then, the studio managed to fully rewrite the screenplay, having changed many plot points and introducing new characters. But its technological might and musical accompaniment nevertheless proved faithful to the original film. In place of latter-day Broadway showtunes, composer Alan Mencken and lyricist Tim Rice wrote several new numbers. One of them, "How Does A Moment Last Forever," was performed by Canadian diva Celine Dion.
