21:00 Beat Film Festival 2017. Citizen Jane: Battle for the City
Documentary. USA 2017, 92 min. Directed by Matt Tyrnauer. In English with Russian subtitles. In 1960 Jane Jacobs’s book The Death and Life of Great American Cities sent shockwaves through the architecture and planning worlds, with its exploration of the consequences of modern planners’ and architects’ reconfiguration of cities. Jacobs was also an activist, who was involved in many fights in mid-century New York, to stop “master builder” Robert Moses from running roughshod over the city. This film retraces the battles for the city as personified by Jacobs and Moses, as urbanization moves to the very front of the global agenda. Many of the clues for formulating solutions to the dizzying array of urban issues can be found in Jacobs’s prescient text, and a close second look at her thinking and writing about cities is very much in order. This film sets out to examine the city of today though the lens of one of its greatest champions. Film - official selection by Toronto International Film Festival 2016, Doc NYC 2016, IDFA 2016. Dancer
09:20, 19:20, 01:20. Documentary. United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine, USA 2016, 85 min. Directed by Steven Cantor. In English, Russian and Ukrainian with Russian subtitles. “Dancer” is an ambitious and detailed study of Polunin’s personal and creative life, collected from rare archive materials, family records, and interviews with Polunin, those close to him, and notable ballet professionals. Famous documentary director Steven Cantor focused on Polunin’s extraordinary physical profile and his unique emotional spectrum, which shows through both on stage and in life. A rebel, a genius, and a loner, Polunin created a stir in the ballet world when he became the youngest principal dancer of the London Royal Ballet in history – and then when, at the peak of his career, he unexpectedly left, citing his desire to be independent, free, and not to belong to anyone, even if such a decision would be accompanied by self-destruction. The film also tells about Polunin’s collaboration with famous photographer David LaChapelle, who shot his expressive dancing for the music video for Hozier’s “Take Me To Church,” which became a smash hit practically overnight.
