Romance. US 2015, 122 min. Directed by Angelina Jolie. Starring: Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Mélanie Laurent, Melvil Poupaud, Niels Arestrup. In English with Russian subtitles. Set in France during the mid-1970s, Vanessa, a former dancer, and her husband Roland, an American writer, travel the country together. They seem to be growing apart, but when they linger in one quiet, seaside town they begin to draw close to some of its more vibrant inhabitants, such as a local bar/café-keeper and a hotel owner.

The film tells the story of a romance between two women (Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara), combining in one film classic Hollywood chic, romance, and secrecy. The debonair and magical vision of New York, created by Todd Haynes and the famous cinematographer Edward Lachman, makes references to the canvases of genius American painter Edward Hopper, classical photography, and the great American melodramas of the 1950s, remaining simultaneously emotionally distant and heightened. “Carol” has already become one of the most discussed films of the season and received a multitude of awards, including Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival (Rooney Mara). The picture received six Oscar nominations, including Best Actress (Cate Blanchett) and Best Supporting Actress (Rooney Mara).

Many celebrities were dragged into the campaign against him and his fight for freedom of choice during the ‘Red Panic’ — from actors John Wayne and Kirk Douglas to the director Otto Preminger. For the title role, Bryan Cranston, the star of “Breaking Bad,” received a 2016 Oscar nomination (Best Actor).
