16:30 A Kind of Murder
Thriller. USA 2016, 95 min. Directed by Andy Goddard. Starring: Imogen Poots, Jessica Biel, Patrick Wilson, Toby Jones, Haley Bennett, Vincent Kartheiser, Eddie Marsan, Radek Lord, Lucas Bentley, Lon Nease. New York, the 1960s. Walter and Clara Stackhouse are by all appearances an ideal couple: he is a successful architect, she is a thriving realtor and the owner of a wonderful house. In fact, Walter has long been considering a divorce, because Clara has tortured him with her pretension, hysterics, and jealousy. One day, Walter open the evening paper to an article about a serial killer, among whose victims are dozens of missing women. He begins to develop an interest in the unsolved murders, and quickly gets wrapped up in a dangerous game… The film is based on a book by Patricia Highsmith, famous for her noir novels (the first of which, Strangers on a Train,” was adapted by Alfred Hitchcock) and the Tom Ripley books.

Having acquired unbelievable knowledge and abilities, Lynch enters the fight against a cruel and powerful organization of contemporary Templars. Justin Kurzel’s (“Macbeth”) film, based on the famous “Assassin’s Creed” games, featuring Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard in the leading roles.

A girl named Gabrielle (Marion Cotillard) dreams of real love, but those around her consider her obsession improper and even insane. Her parents marry her to a Spanish farmer, José, and Gabrielle’s life takes on the appearance of a prison sentence. One day, she is sent to a sanatorium in the Alps, where she falls hopelessly in love with a wounded Vietnam veteran, André (Louis Garrel). Together, they plan to escape and start a new life. Nicole Garcia’s romantic drama, based on the classic novel by Italian writer Milena Agus. The film was nominated for a Palme d’Or.

La La Land

In the hunt for her dream, Mia sets off for Hollywood, where she meets Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a young jazz pianist who has yet to give up the dream of opening his own jazz club – regardless of the fact that his favorite music is going out of style. With time, Mia and Sebastian’s dreams start to come true, and their relationship must stand the test of fame. Damien Chazelle’s (Whiplash) romantic musical, the Critics’ Choice for best film of 2016.

Beginning with bootlegging, he gradually becomes wrapped up in Boston’s criminal underworld, and eventually turns into one of its most notable figures. Ben Affleck’s crime drama, which he directed (his fourth such work), wrote, and starred in.

In Serbian with Russian subtitles. The film’s events take place during the Balkan War. The milkman Kostas (Emir Kusturica) brings provisions across the border every day to soldiers. One day, he meets a mysterious Italian (Monica Bellucci) who transforms his life. Emir Kusturica’s first feature-length film in eight years, based on his novella in the short film collection “Words with Gods.”

Paradise

In Russian with English subtitles. “Paradise” is a feature film, produced with the support of “Russia 1” and the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, about people whose lives and fates crossed paths during the Second World War. The film was the most-discussed premiere of the 73th annual Venice Film Festival. Both critics and audiences noted not only the director’s technical prowess, but also the film's outstanding performances. The festival jury awarded Konchalovsky’s new work with a prize for Best Director. Three unique people's lives cross paths in this story: the Russian emigrant Olga, a member of the French Resistance; the French collaborator, Jules; and the high-ranking German SS officer, Helmut. Olga is arrested for hiding Jewish children from a Nazi search party. Her case is being handled by Jules. He falls in love with her, and seems to offer an easier punishment in exchange for an intimate relationship - but this is not meant to be. This phantom hope of freedom gives way to a cruel reality – Olga ends up in a German concentration camp. Here, she meets Helmut, who seems to have been head-over-heels in love with her at some point in the past. They begin a strange and painful relationship. The Nazis are already close to defeat, and Helmut decides to save Olga from the camp and run away with her to South America. Olga, having already lost hope for freedom, agrees, but at the last moment realises that her understanding of paradise has changed. “Paradise” is a collaborative project between Russia and Germany, realized with the help of the Eurimages Fund. The film was shot in three languages – Russian, German, and French. The film’s leading roles are played by Julia Vysotskaya, young German actor Christian Clauss, and the famous French actor Philippe Duquesne. The role of Heinrich Himmler was played by Viktor Sukhorukov. Filming took place in Russia and Germany.

Dorante is a charming young man from a good family in financial trouble. His friend Dubois works for an intriguing widow, Araminte, with whom Dorante is hopelessly in love. Dubois helps his friend get close to Araminte as a household manager, and manages to tell the widow about the young man’s feelings. But social prejudice and family intrigue prevent a happy ending to this story. A film adaptation of Pierre de Marivaux’s famous comedy, based on the production at Paris’ Odéon Theatre starring Isabelle Huppert and Louis Garrel.

16:50 Two is a Family
Comedy. France 2016, 118 min. Directed by Huge Gélin. Starring: Omar Sy, Clémence Poésie, Antoine Bertrand, Ashley Walters. In French with Russian subtitles. Samuel is a careless party boy, whose life is turned upside down when one of his former girlfriends, Christine, hands him a bundle with his daughter inside. She runs away to London, and the confused Samuel sets off in pursuit. Though his search is unsuccessful, in the course of the trip, Samuel has begun to feel real fatherly love for his daughter. Eight years later, Christine suddenly returns, and demands custody of the child.
