19:00 Ivory. A Crime Story
Documentary. Russia, France, Kenya 2016, 97 min. Directed by Sergey Yastrzhembsky. In Russian with English subtitles. On 21 September, the eve of Elephant Appreciation Day, Pioner Cinema will host a special screening of “Ivory. A Crime Story” and a discussion with director Sergey Yastrzhembsky. 3 years of filming, 30 countries, and more than 250 hours of source material went into making this documentary, which studies the causes and effects of the previously unheard-of destruction of the African elephant population. Every 15 minutes, an elephant dies in Africa at the hands of poachers. In 10 years, elephants could completely disappear from the wild. Who “orders” these mass elephant killings? Documentary director Sergey Yastrzhembsky, after his previous life as a Russian politician, Boris Yeltsin’s press secretary, and Vladimir Putin’s advisor, tells this story in his new film. The film caused a mixed reaction at international film festival, primarily owing to its shocking openness. The director does not observe the laws of political correctness, showing shots of elephant killings mixed with luxury boutiques selling items made of ivory. All of this takes place on the background of interview with elephant conservationists, who are practically waging war with poachers on behalf of the elephants.
