Dancer
13:50, 16:00, 18:45, 20:40. Documentary. United Kingdom, Russia, Ukraine, USA 2016, 85 min. Directed by Steven Cantor. In English, Russian and Ukrainian with Russian subtitles. “Dancer” is an ambitious and detailed study of Polunin’s personal and creative life, collected from rare archive materials, family records, and interviews with Polunin, those close to him, and notable ballet professionals. Famous documentary director Steven Cantor focused on Polunin’s extraordinary physical profile and his unique emotional spectrum, which shows through both on stage and in life. A rebel, a genius, and a loner, Polunin created a stir in the ballet world when he became the youngest principal dancer of the London Royal Ballet in history – and then when, at the peak of his career, he unexpectedly left, citing his desire to be independent, free, and not to belong to anyone, even if such a decision would be accompanied by self-destruction. The film also tells about Polunin’s collaboration with famous photographer David LaChapelle, who shot his expressive dancing for the music video for Hozier’s “Take Me To Church,” which became a smash hit practically overnight.
