23:45 Rocco
Documentary. USA 2016, 105 min. Directed by Thierry Demaizière, Alban Teurlai. In the original with Russian subtitles. Only at Pioner, as part of the International “At the Cinema, At Last” Festival. Rocco Siffredi (a pseudonym inspired by Alain Delon in “Borsalino”) means as much to the porn industry as Mike Tyson does to boxing, and Mick Jagger to rock’n’roll. As an actor, producer, and director, he became one of the most influential and recognizable figures in pornography over 30 years of work, enjoying popularity both within the industry and in mainstream media. This documentary film describes the events in the last months of Rocco’s life as an actor, and the camera accompanies him all over the world: from Hungary, where he lives with his wife and two children and owns his own studio, to California, where the majoirty of the filming takes place. Thierry Demaizière and Alban Teurlai’s film does more than just open up the backstage world of the porn business - it is a kind of confession of the man who both lives in the image Rocco Siffredi, and yet mostly outside of him. The film was presented at the 2016 Venice Film Festival.

14:30 The Red Turtle
Animation. France, Belgium, Japan 2016, 80 min. Directed by Michael Dudok de Wit. No dialogue. Time and time again, a shipwrecked man tries to save himself from a desert island. And time and time again, his bamboo raft is destroyed by an unidentified animal, which turns out to be a giant red turtle. Soon afterwards, it turns into a woman, with whom he will live a long life. “The Red Turtle,” dreamed up and directed by Michael Dudok de Wit and produced by Isao Takahata, one of Ghibli’s mainstays, connects the mysticism inherent to the Japanese studio’s other works and a clear fairytale moralism, more reminiscent of the European religious tradition. One of Ghibli’s founders, director Hayao Miyazaki more than once transplanted European folktale motifs onto a Japanese base, blurring them past the point of recognizability. Now the studio’s signature style returns to Europe, losing its dialogue along the way – as though it were superfluous. This is the first feature-length work by Ghibli after Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement in 2014, when the studio’s production work was temporarily stopped.
