At The Cinema, At Last: David Bowie's weekend: "The Man Who Fell to Earth" — is a sci-fi cult classic from the visionary British director Nicolas Roeg featuring David Bowie’s first starring role, which only served to strengthen his extraterrestrial persona. Bowie’s character, a humanoid alien from the furthest reaches of the universe, arrives on Earth with the goal of obtaining water for his home planet, which is dying of thirst. “The Man Who Fell To Earth” is one of the most stylish and sophisticated films of the 70s, thanks in no small part to Bowie and his unique physicality and ‘detachment,’ all of which are deftly combined to create an unbelievable screen presence."David Bowie: Five Years" — is a documentary dedicated to five of the most important years in the musician’s career: 1971, 1975, 1977, 1981, and 1983. Using extremely rare, never-before-seen archival footage, as well as conversations with Bowie’s contemporaries ranging from Brian Eno to Tony Visconti, the director Francis Whately — who spent more than ten years on the film — creates a unique collage, in all of Bowie’s faces are reflected.
