Young, unmarried couple Sonia and Bruno have just had a son, who Sonia names Jimmy. Bruno, who did not visit her while she was in the hospital, scoffs at the notion of what he considers traditional employment, instead eking out a living primarily on petty crimes committed with his fourteen year old associate, Steve. He even sublets Sonia's small apartment while she is in the hospital, he sleeping either in the homeless shelter or squatting in what he calls his "shack" down by the river. On the day after Sonia gets out of the hospital, she allows Bruno to take Jimmy for a walk while she stands in line for her benefits. On that walk, Bruno makes the unilateral decision to sell Jimmy to a black market adoption agency. Upon finding out what Bruno has done, Sonia has a breakdown and falls unconscious. Fearing that Sonia will turn him over to the police when she regains consciousness, Bruno tries to get Jimmy back while he leaves Sonia in the hospital in her unconscious state. Beat Weekend: Placebo: Alt.Russia

As the band Placebo approached their 20th anniversary they were given a unique opportunity to play ten cities throughout Russia. In a time when Russia was at the forefront of the world’s current affairs, little was actually reported outside the country about its internal culture. Fronted by Placebo’s Stefan Olsdal, the film explores the alternative cultures in Russia’s major cities. As the tour travelled through the country the band went out and met artists, architects, animators and musicians, finding out about alternative creative scenes and celebrating all they have to offer. From Krasnoyarsk in Siberia to St. Petersburg on the Baltic Sea, Placebo: Alt.Russia takes you on the band’s journey, meeting great characters on the way, investigating the alternative culture in Russia, and taking in the raw emotions of Placebo’s powerful concerts.

In doing so, he becomes the link between parallel dimensions and Earth’s defender in a battle with impending doom. The 14th film in the Marvel universe, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch as the all-powerful magician and Tilda Swinton as the Ancient One.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

In English with Russian subtitles. 1926. The magical zoologist Newt Scamander is working on the classification of fantastical beasts and creatures. In preparation for the Magical Congress of the United States of America, Newt packs a suitcase with several dangerous creatures and their natural environments along with them. When these creatures escape, the American magical forces begin a hunt for the researcher. These events compound the already-complex relationship between the magicians and No-Majs (American English for Muggles) of New York. The long-awaited film by David Yates, also responsible for the final installments of the Harry Potter series, based on J.K. Rowling’s book. The events of the film take place 65 years before the beginning of the Potter saga, and the story’s central character is the author of the very same textbook from which Harry would later study.

Hacksaw Ridge

Desmond Doss is an American army private during World War II. For religious reasons, he conscientiously objected to carrying a weapon, and was thus assigned the role of medic. Regardless of his inability to “resist the enemy,” he took part in the most terrible battles of the war, including the Battle of Okinawa, where he saved 75 people and received several serious wounds in the process. A war drama by Mel Gibson, based on a true story about the WWII veteran and hero Desmond Tom Doss – the first of three conscientious objectors to receive the highest American military honor, the Medal of Honor.

A hard-hitting crime drama from the Dardenne brothers (“Rosetta,” “The Kid with a Bike”) about feelings of guilt and moral demands, nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Sofia returns to the Moscow opera theatre, where she once starred in Tchaikovsky’s “Queen of Spades” – it was her first major success. Hoping to outdo it, she begins to search for material to create a new, even more astounding version of the work. Trying to overshadow everyone, herself included, Sofia uses every means known to her…“Queen of Spades” is an exceedingly-untraditional adaptation of this work, combining mysticism with noire to recreate the reality of a contemporary megapolis – Moscow, the city that truly never sleeps – and the eternal myth about art and beauty, demanding insane and at times even devilish sacrifices.
