The young Katherine is married off to a withered aristocrat – an embittered, despotic person twice her own age. During one of her husband’s long trips, she meets a young worker on the estate, and a passion between them is born. An adaptation of Nikolay Leskov’s “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District,” set in the English provinces during the 19th century.
