09:15 Jackie
Biography/Drama. Chilie, France, USA 2016, 100 min. Directed by Pablo Larraín. Starring: Natalie Portamn, Peter Sarsgaard, Greta Gerwig, John Hut. In English with Russian subtitles. “Jackie” is a contemporary drama about First Lady of the United States Jacqueline Kennedy (Natalie Portman), who turns around in the days following the shocking assassination of her husband – President John F. Kennedy, who was shot during his visit to Dallas and died right in the arms of his wife. The time after his death, when she never quite came completely to her senses and didn’t let her loved ones out of her sight, creates the suspense in “Jackie” – just like in one of Pablo Larraín’s previous films, “Post Mortem.” Right after the tragedy, Jackie begins to lose influence in the White House, where Kennedy’s political opponents have already begun knocking at the door. But it is she who is forced to fight for how the world would remember her husband, and defends his name from political intrigue and speculation The film recreates in detail the rituals and daily life of the White House – that luxurious “house of cards,” where Jackie becomes a captive. The film served as Chilean Pablo Larraín’s Hollywood debut, who has long since been a star on the festival circuit, and the role of Jackie has already been called an acting feat for Natalie Portman – whose work on the film has made her an Oscar favorite. The film’s world premiere took place at the last Venice Film Festival, where it received a prize for best screenplay.

Manhattan
20:30, 20:35. Comedy. USA 1979, 96 min. Directed by Woody Allen. Starring: Woody Allen, Diane Keaton, Mariel Hemingway. In English with Russian subtitles. Recently, the film was restored in the most advanced digital 4K format, and presented anew to audiences at the Venice Film Festival. This screening, as part of the “Priceless Cities of Film” festival, will serve as the Russian premiere of the restored version. From the moment of its release in 1979 to the present day, “Manhattan” has been considered one of Woody Allen’s best films: the concentration of the main themes of his oeuvre, a classic example of his inimitable humor and ruthless self-deprecation. But the main thing in this tragicomic story of a middle-aged intellectual (Woody Allen) is the image of New York, a simultaneously gigantic and miniscule world of a city, full of romanticism and sadness, magic and melancholy, poetry and prose. It presents each and every person in it a limitless choice in everything, but ultimately leaves them in solitude.

13:35 Paterson
Drama. USA 2016, 118 min. Directed by Jim Jarmusch. Starring: Adam Driver, Golshifteh Farahani, Luis Da Silva Jr., Jared Gilman, William Jackson Harper, Frank Harts, Kara Hayward, Barry Shabaka Henley, Sterling Jerins, Chasten Harmon. In English with Russian subtitles. Paterson is a poet and bus driver, living in Paterson, New Jersey – a coincidence which he finds unsurprising, since so much in the world "rhymes." His life is defined by the streets of route 23, nightly walks with his bulldog Marvin, conversations with his wife, Laura, and the black-and-white patterns with which she decorates clothing. He dedicates his poetry to Laura, and she tries to convince him to publish them, or at least make a few copies of the pages of his notebooks. In “Paterson,” Jim Jarmusch sings the praises of everyday life and the happiness of simple things. After all, in the words of William Carlos Williams, author of the famous poem “Paterson,” “No ideas but in things.” The film was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

11:15 Sing
Animation. USA 2016, 108 min. Directed by Christophe Lourdelet, Garth Jennings. Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane. In English with Russian subtitles. Finding himself on the edge of financial ruin, the owner of a theatre (who is also a panda) announces a competition for performers. Due to a printing error, the posters advertise a prize of $100,000. The news quickly spreads around the whole town, and a very “diverse” crowd gathers at the audition: Rosita the pig, Johnny the gorilla, Mike the mouse, and Ash the porcupine. Each has a dream, song, and journey of their own. “Sing” is the ideal film for the “Idol”/“Hello, We’re Looking for Talent!” era, shot by Garth Jennings, the creator of music videos for such artists as Robby Williams, Blur, and Radiohead. The British director’s first animated work, this film is first and foremost an encyclopedia of pop music. Here, Frank Sinatra meets Leonard Cohen, and Fred Astaire collaborates with The Beatles. A place is even found for rock “royalty”: while the director entrusted the majority of the hits to his actors, the Gipsy Kings and Queen remain untouched in their original recordings. And none other than the legend of Motown, Stevie Wonder, recorded a new song, “Faith” (with Ariana Grande) especially for the movie, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.
