18:10 Jackie
Biography/Drama. Chilie, France, USA 2016, 100 min. Directed by Pablo Larraín. Starring: Natalie Portamn, Peter Sarsgaard, Greta Gerwig, John Hut. In English with Russian subtitles. “Jackie” is a contemporary drama about First Lady of the United States Jacqueline Kennedy (Natalie Portman), who turns around in the days following the shocking assassination of her husband – President John F. Kennedy, who was shot during his visit to Dallas and died right in the arms of his wife. The time after his death, when she never quite came completely to her senses and didn’t let her loved ones out of her sight, creates the suspense in “Jackie” – just like in one of Pablo Larraín’s previous films, “Post Mortem.” Right after the tragedy, Jackie begins to lose influence in the White House, where Kennedy’s political opponents have already begun knocking at the door. But it is she who is forced to fight for how the world would remember her husband, and defends his name from political intrigue and speculation The film recreates in detail the rituals and daily life of the White House – that luxurious “house of cards,” where Jackie becomes a captive. The film served as Chilean Pablo Larraín’s Hollywood debut, who has long since been a star on the festival circuit, and the role of Jackie has already been called an acting feat for Natalie Portman – whose work on the film has made her an Oscar favorite. The film’s world premiere took place at the last Venice Film Festival, where it received a prize for best screenplay.

09:15 Personal Shopper
Drama/Thriller. France 2016, 105 min. Directed by Olivier Assayas. Starring: Kristen Stewart, Lars Eidinger, Sigrid Bouaziz. In English, French with Russian subtitles. “Personal Shopper,” by the French director Olivier Assayas, is the most unusual film of the year in its genre. A “fashion thriller,” simultaneously a mystical drama and portrait of today’s society, in which the cult of fashion, material culture, and new technology cannot in any way defend against the constant closeness of death and the afterlife, lurking in the most ordinary things. Maureen (Kristen Stewart), an American, works in Paris as an assistant to a high-and-mighty European star, collecting her designer outfits from Parisian boutiques – which she herself is forbidden to wear. But she is not just here in Paris for work – her twin brother recently passed away here, and our heroine continually feels his presence, believing that his spirit is always somewhere nearby.

09:20 Sing
Animation. USA 2016, 108 min. Directed by Christophe Lourdelet, Garth Jennings. Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon, Seth MacFarlane. In English with Russian subtitles. Finding himself on the edge of financial ruin, the owner of a theatre (who is also a panda) announces a competition for performers. Due to a printing error, the posters advertise a prize of $100,000. The news quickly spreads around the whole town, and a very “diverse” crowd gathers at the audition: Rosita the pig, Johnny the gorilla, Mike the mouse, and Ash the porcupine. Each has a dream, song, and journey of their own. “Sing” is the ideal film for the “Idol”/“Hello, We’re Looking for Talent!” era, shot by Garth Jennings, the creator of music videos for such artists as Robby Williams, Blur, and Radiohead. The British director’s first animated work, this film is first and foremost an encyclopedia of pop music. Here, Frank Sinatra meets Leonard Cohen, and Fred Astaire collaborates with The Beatles. A place is even found for rock “royalty”: while the director entrusted the majority of the hits to his actors, the Gipsy Kings and Queen remain untouched in their original recordings. And none other than the legend of Motown, Stevie Wonder, recorded a new song, “Faith” (with Ariana Grande) especially for the movie, for which he was nominated for a Golden Globe.

14:20 Toni Erdmann
Drama/Comedy. Germany, Austria 2016, 162 min. Directed by Maren Ade. Starring: Peter Simonischek, Sandra Hüller, Michael Wittenborn. In German with Russian subtitles. A former music teacher, trickster, and dreamer, Winfried is desperate to mend his relationship with his adult daughter Ines, a perpetually-busy employee of a global corporation. Her father never sees her, hears from her, or even knows anything about her, and has started to joke that he has somebody to replace her. In order to get her attention, he passes himself off as an eccentric businessman, Toni Erdmann, and makes a surprise trip to Bucharest, where his daughter is working at another of her company’s offices. With his hilarious, scandalous escapades, Winfried stuns everyone around him into a shocked silence in his efforts to win a place in Ines’ heart, all the while dragging her into a reciprocal – and no less maddening – game. "Toni Erdmann" is an outstanding comedy, a touching drama, an absolutely unusual love story, and the most accurate, perceptive film about fathers and their children in an age where personal and intergenerational connections are constantly breaking down. Based on a poll conducted among of members of the “Fipresci” international film critics' association, the film was awarded this year’s Grand Prix. It is also nominated for “Oscar” as «Best Foreign Language Film».
