17:15 Desert Dancer
Drama. Russia, UK 2014, 100 min. Directed by Richard Raymond. Starring: Freida Pinto, Nazanin Boniadi, Tom Cullen, Reece Ritchie, Marama Corlett, Akin Gazi, Simon Kassianides, Makram Khoury. The idols of his underground dance group were Gene Kelly, Rudolf Nureyev, and Michael Jackson — whose video clips were also illegal. As a result, Afshin’s own life ends up in danger. Akram Khan, the famous choreographer, served as director of the dance numbers in Richard Raymond’s debut film. He said, “This film is not only about dance, but about the reasons why dance is important to our life. I am inspired not just by this story of a battle for freedom from political oppression through dance, but by the thought that we all have the right for freedom, regardless of what country, nationality, or culture we belong to. Dance has no physical borders.”

23:50 Eisenstein In Guanajuato
Drama. Netherlands, Mexico, Finland, Belgium, France 2015, 105 min. Directed by Peter Greenaway. Starring: Elmer Bäck, Luis Alberti, Maya Zapata, Lisa Owen, Stelio Savante. In English audio with Russian subtitles. The film tells the story of 33-year-old Sergei Eisenstein’s trip to Mexico in 1931. At that time Eisenstein was already a legendary Soviet director — having created the masterpieces “Battleship Potemkin” and “Strike.” After an unsuccessful attempt to make a film in Hollywood, Eisenstein delves deep into Mexican culture and mythology. He begins work on a new film, “¡Que viva México!,” to be produced by the American writer Upton Sinclair. Unfortunately, the picture was left unfinished by the director, but in Guanajuato, Eisenstein experiences a far more important and intimate event: he reveals his sexuality... The new film by famous British director Peter Greenaway, author of legendary baroque dramas “The Draughtsman’s Contract” and “The Cook, The Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover.” Greenaway’s interest in the heritage of Russian and Soviet art was always enormous (you might remember his recent exhibit “The Golden Age of the Russian Avant-Garde” in the “Manege”) but he has an especial and personal interest in the work of Sergei Eisenstein.“Eisenstein in Guanajuato” is the first of Greenaway’s planned films about Eisenstein, a freeform fantasy about the Mexican period — the least well known and most mysterious — in the great director’s life, about which Peter Greenaway himself said: “It was the 10 days which shook Eisenstein forever...” The role of Sergei Eisenstein is played by the Finnish actor Elmer Bäck. The premiere of the film took place in the Competition of the Berlin Film Festival in February, 2015. Apart from these showings at Pioner Cinema, “Eisenstein in Guanajuato” will not have a theatrical release in Russia.

Together, they form a love triangle that’s not so simple to escape.“Love” is an erotic drama from the auteur behind “Irreversible” and “Enter the Void” (filmed in 3D). The film’s candidness is already being compared with Lars von Trier’s “Nymphomaniac” and Abdellatif Kechiche’s “Blue Is the Warmest Color,” but Noé’s “Love” remains, first and foremost, a genuinely romantic not unsentimental film — a proclamation on the necessity of love. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, as part of the “Midnight Screenings” programme.
