20:30 Dennis Rowland (USA)
Dennis RowlandEnergetic and extremely charming Afro-American singer Dennis Rowland, who used to sing for years in the legendary Count Basie Orchestra, performs at Union of Composers Club. Rowland has a voice made for jazz. His voice and his style took him all to sorts of places - as a front man of Count Basie he performed at Carnegie Hall, the Lincoln Center and the Sydney Opera House. Dennis Rowland happened to collaborate with Billy Eckstine, Ella Fitzgerald and "Little Miss Sassy", Sarah Vaughan. As a creative person, building up his solo career, Dennis experiments with styles and mixes swing, blues standards repertoire, R&B and even pop and funk. His trademark strength, however, features swinging style and appealing voice which is best displayed on his third Concord disc, a tribute to Miles Davis – “Now Dig This”. After leaving Count Basie Orchestra, Rowland was able to spend more time with his other passion and acted in "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Big River", "The Seven Deadly Sins", which also featured Cleo Laine, and, in the mid-90s, "Blues In The Night". Based in Phoenix, Arizona, Rowland continues to sing as well as act and in 1995 was signed by Concord Records, making an album with former Basie drummer Gregg Field. Trying to branch beyond the swing/blues/standards repertoire, Rowland's second Concord album ("Get Here") had some R&B-ish numbers and selections open to the influences of pop and funk.
