19:00 Denis Matsuev and "Wien - Berlin" Orchestra
Performers: Denis Matsuev (piano), Chamber Orchestra "Wien - Berlin" (concert masters of the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic orchestras). Conducted by Rainer Honeck (Austria). The program includes Schnittke's Concerto for piano and string orchestra, Shostakovich's Concerto # 1 for piano and trumpet solo and orchestra, P. Tchaikovsky's Serenade for string orchestra. The ensemble "Wien - Berlin" was founded in 1983 as a wind quintet with many exceptional qualities. Five soloists from Vienna and Berlin, primarily principal players with the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonic, decided to put their joint chamber music activities on a firm footing. The group quickly achieved a tonal and musical homogeneity resulting from the combination of five outstanding soloists, each contributing his own stimulus and musical ideas to the development of a rich and vital whole. Ensemble "Wien - Berlin" regularly performs with the pianist Maurizio Pollini at the most prestigious music centres all over the world including international festivals like Salzburg Festival. The variety of their programmes is enriched by pianists such as James Levine, Alexander Lonquich, Stefan Vladar, Elisabeth Leonskaja, Elena Bashkirova to name a few. Rainer Honeck joined the first violins of the orchestra of the Wiener Staatsoper and the Wiener Philharmoniker in 1981, advancing to the position of concert master at the Staatsoper in 1984 and at the Philharmoniker in 1992. Rainer Honeck performs as a soloist in Austria, Europe, Japan and the USA with the Wiener Philharmoniker. He also regularly works with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo, including a series of concerts featuring all of Mozart's compositions for violin and orchestra.
