19:00 "New Russia" Orchestra, Merav Barnea (Israel)
The "New Russia" Symphony Orchestra conducted by David Stern (USA), the former music director of the Israel Opera and founder/director of the Paris-based opera studio and period-instrument ensemble Opera Fuoco, the incoming opera music director for the Crested Butte Music Festival in Colorado, will perform Strauss' "Don Juan", Berg's Seven Songs for Soprano and Orchestra, Weill's Alabama song from the opera "Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny" and Mahler's Symphony # 1. Soloist - Merav Barnea (soprano, Israel). The "New Russia" State Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1990 by order of the Government of the RSFSR. Yury Bashmet assumed leadership of the orchestra in 2002, opening up a new chapter in its history. Under Bashmet’s leadership, the orchestra acquired its own unique manner of playing, which is distinguished by creative freedom, audacious interpretations and startlingly inspired performances, all combined with a full, rich sound. Many eminent musicians have collaborated with the orchestra. Since 2002, the orchestra has played more than 350 concerts in Russia and abroad, including in cities of the Volga region, the Golden Ring, the Urals, Siberia, the Moscow region, the Baltic States, Azerbaijan, Belarus and Ukraine, as well as in France, Germany, Greece, Great Britain, Italy, Holland, Spain, Austria, Turkey, Bulgaria, India, Finland and Japan. A varied repertoire, successfully combining classics and contemporary music, constantly attracts listeners. The Israeli soprano Merav Barnea started her professional singing training at the age of twenty one, after many years of ballet training and four inspiring years living and working in the remote Israeli desert. In 1998, during her studies in Berlin, she won the Richard Wagner Society award, and the Paul Hindermith Society award in 1999. In 2000 Merav debuted at The Israeli Opera as the First Lady in Mozart's "Die Zauberflote". From 2006-2009 she was the leading dramatic soprano of Theater Ulm in Germany where she received abundant praise, especially for her outstanding Marie in "Wozzeck", her Elisabeth in "Tannhauser", the Fata Morgana in "Die Liebe zu den drei Orangen" and as Poppea in Monteverdi's "Poppea". Apart from opera, Barnea performs modern music, oratorios, and gives recitals in Israel and Europe. "Striking stage presence …not preoccupied by vocal orthodoxy" reviews praised Merav Barnea's Lady Macbeth in France, describing her unique performance and extraordinary stage persona.
