Question:
I have a severe anal itch. I have tried many over the counter ointments but nothing works. I have had hemmeroids but this is different. The itching is driving me crazy. What might this be a symptom of?
klm
Answer:
This can be due to a number of causes and to be sure of a diagnosis you should see your doctor for examination. This symptom can be the result of internal hemorrhoids (i.e. ones that do not protrude and which the patient may not 'recognize' as being present) which result in some leakage of feces thereby irritating the skin; it may be due to a fungal infection; there may be other causes such as the result of diarrhea or even diet. As OTC remedies have not worked they may not have had the right ingredients for a cure as well as relief of symptoms, therefore physical examination is needed to make the diagnosis and select the appropriate treatment. These comments are made for the purpose of discussion and should NOT be used as recommendations for or against therapies or other treatments. An individual patient is always advised to consult their own physician.
