As part of the UK-Russia Year of Music, Associate Artists of the UK’s National Opera Studio will be visiting Moscow, bringing with them music from two distinctive periods of British music during the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603) and Queen Elizabeth II (1952-present). Cultural life at the court of Elizabeth I was incredibly rich. Songs, masques and plays were written in abundance and were commonly included in all kinds of celebrations and anniversaries. Outside the court, many new plays were written which also included music and song. Religious music was increasingly inventive even though England was staunchly and defensively Protestant. Personal and private songs of the time, love songs and songs of admiration and empathy will feature in the first part of the programme. The second part of The Two Queen Elizabeths will feature new music written for young singers at the National Opera Studio in 2018. These are examples of creative and collaborative ways of developing contemporary music for voice. The singers - who were able to choose the themes of the arias, based on a personal experience, a dream or an ambition - worked closely with the composer, librettist and pianist as a team. The result is a series of remarkable musical settings on deeply-felt personal themes. Tsaritsyno Opera House |
