 Offering a metalcore take on the sound of predecessors like Linkin Park, Crown the Empire fuse electronic ambience with metal catharsis, creating a moody and dramatic sound that sets the Dallas, Texas band apart from its contemporaries. Originally featuring singers Andy Leo and David Escamilla, guitarists Brandon Hoover and Bennett Vogelman, bassist Hayden Tree, keyboard player Austin Duncan, and drummer Brent Taddle, the seven-piece band puts its massive ranks to good use, crafting a sound that's dense without being so busy that the message is lost in the noise. Crown the Empire made their debut in 2011 with the self-released EP Limitless, followed by their first full-length effort, The Fallout, which arrived on Rise Records in 2012. The record was reissued later in 2013 with a complete re-recording of Limitless while the band was touring. In January 2014, Rise Records announced via their website and social media outlets that Crown the Empire would be recording, and The Resistance: Rise of the Runaways appeared in May. Co-produced by Joey Sturgis and Dan Korneff, it was well received by critics and fans alike. Crown the Empire headlined their own tour through the rest of the summer before taking time off. In the fall of 2015 the band released "Prisoners of War" as a digital single. On June 10, 2016, the band released another new single, "Zero," in anticipation of its upcoming third studio long-player, Retrograde, which dropped later that month. Retrograde debuted atop the Billboard Hard Rock, Independent, and Rock charts, and hit number 15 on the Top 200.

 Iceland pop experimentalists Múm were formed by Gunnar Örn Tynes, Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason, and classically trained twin sisters Gyða and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir. Formed in 1997, the group met while working on a children's play. Smárason found his perception of music changed through hearing Aphex Twin and decided that he would abandon the guitar-based concepts of his prior bands. Following a number of singles and remixes, the full-length Yesterday Was Dramatic -- Today Is OK was released in 2000 through TMT/Thule in Iceland and Tugboat in the U.K. 2001 saw the release of Please Smile My Noise Bleed on Morr Music, a compilation of remixes from the likes of isan and Arovane. A second full-length, Finally We Are No One, was released the following year on Fat Cat. Gyða left the band to focus on her studies before Múm's third album, Summer Make Good, arrived in spring 2004; the band rounded out the year with the Dusk Log EP. The next two years found Múm on the road. In 2005, the group collaborated with the National Dutch Chamber Orchestra at Amsterdam's Holland Festival on a piece inspired by the works of composer Iannis Xenakis. Múm returned to the studio the following year, and in the interim released a live album, The Peel Session, which was originally recorded in 2002 by the BBC. For 2007's Go Go Smear the Poison Ivy, the band was down to founding members Tynes and Smárason, who enlisted the help of guitarist/vocalist/violinist Ólöf Arnalds, trumpet/keyboard player Eiríkur Orri Ólafsson, vocalist/cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir, percussionist Samuli Kosminen, and multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Mr. Silla. The group recorded their fifth album, 2009's Sing Along to Songs You Don't Know, in Finland and Estonia as well as their native Iceland. Fans had to wait four more years for another new studio album from the band, although they weren't entirely bereft of new product, as a Christmas EP, Gleðileg Jól, was released in 2011, and a compilation of early tracks in 2012 entitled Early Birds. Early in 2013, a track entitled "Whistle" emerged -- a surprise collaboration with none other than Kylie Minogue. That September, Múm released their sixth album, Smilewound, which featured the Kylie track and marked the return to the group of Gyða Valtýsdóttir for the first time in ten years.

 The fathers of grindcore, Napalm Death pushed the envelope of metal to new extremes of ear-splitting intensity, rejecting all notions of melody, subtlety, and good taste to forge a brand of sonic assault almost frightening in its merciless brutality. Formed in 1981, they trafficked in the usual heavy metal fare for the first few years of their existence, but by the middle of the decade they began to expand their horizons by incorporating elements of hardcore and thrash into the mix; ultimately, Napalm Death's sonic experiments evolved into a blistering mutation of metal that they dubbed grindcore, a kind of extremist noise attack characterized by incredibly brief song lengths, demonic vocals, and eye-opening sociopolitical lyrical commentary. Building their reputation on a series of incendiary radio sessions and live dates, Napalm Death set about recording their debut LP, Scum, issued in 1987 on the Earache label. With 1988's From Enslavement to Obliteration, the band grew even more extreme, issuing some 54 total tracks, many of them clocking in at just a few seconds in length. To ring in 30 years of punishing noise, the grind metal pioneers released their 15th album, Utilitarian, in 2012, followed by split singles with the Melvins and Insect Warfare in 2013.

 Sync24 is a production alias of Ambient producer and DJ Daniel Ringström, better known for being half of Carbon Based Lifeforms. Swedish ambient duo Carbon Based Lifeforms was founded in Gothenburg in 1996 by Daniel Ringström & Johannes Hedberg, initially as an offshoot of Notch, their group with Mikael Lindqvist. 1998 album The Path (initially released as a Notch recording) combined atmospheric synthesizers, downtempo beats, acid basslines from a Roland TB-303, didgeridoo, and field recordings. The album was released under the CBL moniker as The Phat #000001/The Phat #000002 online in 1999. The duo signed with French ambient/trance label Ultimae Records in 2002, and released proper debut Hydroponic Garden in 2003. The album's downtempo acid ambient style proved to be a cult favorite, and follow-up World of Sleepers arrived in 2006. In November of 2009, CBL played two sold-out concerts at IMAX dome/planetarium Cosmonova inside Stockholm's Museum of Natural History. After scrapping sessions for a third album in 2009, the less acid-tinged Interloper finally appeared in 2010, at which point Ringström was known as Daniel Segerstad. CBL switched to beatless ambient music in 2011 with the release of fourth album Twentythree, as well as the hour-long drone piece VLA. The duo's first soundtrack, for suspense-thriller Refuge, was released by Leftfield Records in 2013. In 2015, the duo signed with Blood Music and began remastering some of their older albums for release on vinyl. Ringström has released one studio album and one mix compilation as Sync24.

 Turilli/Lione RHAPSODY is the new group featuring original RHAPSODY members Luca Turilli and Fabio Lione, completed by former RHAPSODY members Dominique Leurquin, Patrice Guers and Alex Holzwarth. At the end of December 2018, Turilli and Lione entered the studio to record their new band's debut album "Zero Gravity" (Rebirth and Evolution). Vocalist Fabio Lione says about the album's opening track: "'Phoenix Rising' represents the bridge between our past and our artistic future, including some elements of the traditional symphonic metal school combined with heavy guitars, the modern sounds we love nowadays and an ethnic interlude featuring the unique voice of Mongolian artist Uyanga Bold. Once recorded, 'Phoenix Rising' got immediately stuck in our head and we found ourselves singing the chorus all day long. For all these reasons we consider it as the perfect opener for our debut album and for our upcoming live shows!" Guitarist/keyboardist/pianist Luca Turilli adds, "Fabio's emotional performance underlines the intense lyrics inspired by sacred geometry, quantum physics and the secrets of the ancient wisdom, telling about a human being and his dramatic process of self-realization after experiencing an inner quake and the impelling need to move beyond the illusion of duality and the loops related with the material aspects of life in order to reach a higher level of consciousness and find his place in the geometry of existence."
