Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja has inspired, from reputable organs such as The New Yorker, comparisons with such legendary figures as Luciano Pavarotti and even Beniamino Gigli. In the words of Opera Vivrà, his voice "is marked by a distinctively bright shine, one that very much reminds of his native Malta." For half a century, the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra has been Malta’s leading musical ensemble. The orchestra was founded in April 1968 As Malta’s only professional orchestra, the MPO averages more than one performance a week including symphonic concerts, opera productions in Malta and Gozo, community outreach and educational initiatives. In 2018 the orchestra had a big World Tour and performed in leading venues across the globe, including in the Germany, Austria, USA and Russia. On this exciting journey, they performed concerts in 5 leading concert halls including Carnegie Hall – New York, and the Mariinsky Theatre – St Petersburg. This tour was also supported by the European Foundation for the Support of Culture. The MPO is a keen exponent of Maltese composers, regularly performing their works in Malta and overseas, as well as frequently premiering, and commissioning new compositions. Through the MPO Academy and the Malta Youth Orchestra – which itself regularly gives concerts across Malta, the MPO is also responsible for the training and professional development of the next generation of Maltese musicians.
