19:00 After Britten
"After Britten" concert is performed by Musica Viva orchestra directed by Alexander Walker. Benjamin Britten loved Russia, Russian Music and had close working relationship with many Russian musicians, notably Rostropovich. Britten visited Russia many times and as Britten took Russian to his heart, so Russian audiences took Britten to theirs. Consequently, much of his music is known and loved by Russian audiences. In the 21st century, there has been an explosion of compositional talent in Britain and this is an opportunity for Moscow to find out if it can love this music too. The programme introduces the Moscow audience to contemporary UK music and its most remarkable representatives. Programme: Britten: "A Suite on English Folk Songs “A time there was…”"; Hannah Kendall: "Kanashibari"; Thomas Ades: "Three Studies from Couperin"; Julian Anderson: "The Bird Sings with Its Fingers"; David Matthews: "Aubade" and James MacMillan: "The Sun Danced." "After Britten" programme is part of the UK-Russia Year of Music 2019 and is supported through the Grant scheme for Russian organisations.
