The Nest

A British businessman and his American wife decide to leave the New World and move to London with their child for the sake of the business and their family. They set off for a gloomy old mansion in Surrey, hoping that their life will now chart a new course. At first, it seems that everything is really going better than before, but these are just first impressions. Contradictions and problems pile up, eventually destroying the family from the inside.

Dmitri Hvorostovsky sings Count di Luna in the first pairing of the two Russian superstars at the Met since 2002, with Yonghoon Lee as Manrico, the title character, Štefan Kocán as Ferrando, and Dolora Zajick in her signature role of the demented gypsy Azucena.

James Levine conducts the first Met revival of Wagner’s Tannhäuser since 2004, seen in Otto Schenk’s 1977 production. Johan Botha sings his first company performances of the demanding title role, in a cast that also includes Peter Mattei as Wolfram, his second Met Wagner role; Günther Groissböck as the Landgraf; and Eva-Maria Westbroek as Elisabeth and Michelle DeYoung as Venus, the human and divine rivals for Tannhäuser’s affection. Tristan und Isolde opens the Met season in a new production by Mariusz Treliński (the director responsible for last season’s double bill of Iolanta and Bluebeard’s Castle), and will be well served by a cast of outstanding Wagnerians: Nina Stemme as Isolde, Stuart Skelton as Tristan, Ekaterina Gubanova as Brangäne, and René Papeas King Marke, with Sir Simon Rattle conducting, in one of his rare appearances at the Met. Undine, an employee of the Berlin History Museum, can tell you a lot about the architecture of the German capital. But her personal life remains unhappy. The sadness does not last long: soon she meets a diver named Christophe who is impressed by Undine's lecture. Together, they will learn a lot about happiness and pain, intimacy and separation, as well as the mystical side of the city. This is a new film dedicated to Berlin by Christian Petzold, one of the leaders of the "Berlin school."
