Dear Comrades! (Dorogie tovarischi!)
12:20, 22:55. Drama, History. Russia 2020, 121 min. Directed by Andrey Konchalovskiy. Starring: Yulia Vystoskaya, Sergey Erlish, Yulia Burova, Andrey Gusev, Vladislav Komarov. In Russian with English subtitles. The main character of the film is Lyudmila, a high-ranking employee of the Novocherkassk City Committee in 1962. The country has decided to raise prices on basic produce and home goods, and the city is exploding with discontent and rebellion. The heroine and her family are caught up in the whirlwind of the uprising and face something that she never wanted to experience. The premiere of Andrey Konchalovsky's new film was held at the Venice Film Festival, where the film was awarded the Special Jury Prize. However, "Dear Comrades!" should be interesting to Russian audiences first and foremost, as it tells about the painful and rarely covered topic of the Soviet past.

The Witches
12:05. Fantasy, comedy. USA 2020, 105 min. Directed by Robert Zemeckis. Starring: Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci, Codie-Lei Eastick. In English with Russian subtitles. This is the story of an orphan boy who, in late 1967, moves to with his loving grandmother live in the rural town of Demopolis in Alabama. There they meet a beautiful witch. This new acquaintance comes right in time, as the witches are preparing a grand conspiracy. A new film adaptation of the classic book by Roald Dahl, this time from Robert Zemeckis.

The Metropolitan Opera 2019, 189 min (with two intervals). Directed by Franco Zeffirelli. Starring: Christine Goerke, Eleonora Buratto, Yusif Eyvazov. In Italian. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts Franco Zeffirelli’s celebrated production of Turandot, which stars Christine Goerke in the title role of the icy Chinese princess who has renounced all men. Yusif Eyvazov sings Calàf, the suitor who risks his head for her hand, and sings the famed aria “Nessun dorma.” Eleonora Buratto is the slave girl Liù, and James Morris is Calàf’s long-lost father, Timur. Filled with stirring music and songs, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama is a show of phenomenal inventiveness. At its heart are astonishing lifesized puppets by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.

Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts William Kentridge’s new production of Alban Berg’s expressionistic masterpiece Wozzeck, regarded for its intense emotional power and brilliant score as one of the most significant operas of the 20th century. Composed during and in the aftermath of World War I, Berg’s dark exploration of a soldier besieged by the evils of society is staged by Kentridge in a ramshackle warren of stairs, ramps, discarded furniture, and debris.
